LeadingAge Maryland, Civic Works and Grace Medical Center (formerly Bon Secours Hospital) were selected to receive a grant from the West Baltimore Renaissance Foundation (WBRF) to help identify and combat addiction issues in senior housing, provide health services, and connect individuals to benefits and other programs. The strategy, EQUIP (Energize, Quality of Life, Uplift, Integrate, and Promote), will focus on four West Baltimore senior affordable housing buildings in 2025. "LeadingAge is doing critical work combating the opioid crisis in our city. Through partnerships like this one, supported by the West Baltimore Renaissance Foundation, my Administration — along with the Baltimore City Health Department and the Mayor's Office of Older Adult Affairs and Advocacy — is acting on our commitment to ensure Baltimore's older residents have access to vital resources and training opportunities. I am one of three representatives bringing a peer and family and community based perspective to the BH JLEC. "Hundreds of millions have been invested in behavioral health in our state, and an alphabet soup of task forces and other entities have studied the issue. Yet, “With all that investment and all that work, we still see that the system does not work for everyone.” That’s Amber Leaders, a senior policy advisor to Governor Jay Inslee and co-chair of the Joint Legislative Executive Committee on Behavioral Health, or JLEC. JLEC’s charge, according to Leaders, is not to set the state on a new path, but rather assess what’s been done, the challenges that remain, and craft a long-term strategic vision for Washington’s behavioral health system." TODAY! SAMHSA just added more seats for a very popular topic: Financing Peer Crisis Respites in the United States Thursday, November 21, 2–3 p.m. ET Peer crisis respites are recovery-oriented programs that can successfully provide trauma-informed care to individuals in behavioral health crises. The emerging evidence base demonstrates the efficacy of peer crisis respites, but to date there are few studies on the cost-effectiveness of these programs. https://ow.ly/xzXk50UbWrg?

Behavioral Emergencies account for up to 8% of EMS Calls. Here are 3 questions to consider: ? When someone calls 911 for a Behavioral Emergency what resources should be sent? Police or EMS? Historically, these calls have been managed by law enforcement, yet many noted that this led to the criminalization of mental health crises. ? Does your EMS organization emphasize updated training to include verbal de-escalation and have you considered new treatment modalities? ? Are Emergency Departments the best place for these patients? We all know the answer to this last question. _____ So What's the Solution? The DOH in LA County addressed these three issues very nicely using a three-pronged approach: 1. Standardized Dispatch 2. Enhanced EMS Protocols 3. Alternate Transport Destinations Watch the NAEMSP Florida Chapter webinar below to learn more.
Are you interested in an in-depth look at Los Angeles County Department of Health Services groundbreaking initiative to improve EMS response to #behavioral health emergencies (BHEs)? ?? Important Update for Behavioral Health Providers To support behavioral health capacity while meeting the needs of high-acuity members, CareOregon will close its network to unlicensed board-registered associate providers without a CareOregon contract or employment through a state-certified agency starting July 31, 2025. This decision ensures that all providers in our network meet high standards for safety, clinical care, credentialing, and oversight—delivering the quality care our members deserve. I'm excited to be presenting at the Oklahoma Rural Health Conference on two critical topics: behavioral health integration and creating a community collaborative to address social drivers of health! Behavioral health integration is essential for ensuring that mental health is addressed as part of whole-person care. Integrating behavioral health services into primary care settings can reduce stigma, improve access, and ensure patients receive comprehensive support for both physical and mental health needs. In rural areas, where access to specialized behavioral health services can be limited, this approach is especially impactful. Creating a community collaborative to address social drivers of health is equally important. Factors like housing stability, food security, and access to transportation significantly influence health outcomes. By engaging community partners, we can develop sustainable solutions tailored to the unique needs of our rural populations. Together, we can build stronger, healthier communities by addressing these upstream factors and ensuring equitable access to care and resources. Looking forward to engaging with healthcare providers and community leaders to share insights, discuss challenges, and explore innovative solutions!
