#Scientists need to become as politically active as any other citizens. This doesn’t mean that the scientific work of scientists should pay attention to political skirmishes. We need to educate and advocate for time-honored #values of our beautiful community. Scientists should weigh in on the use of scientific #evidence in #policy making to avoid policy that by definition would otherwise be idiotic or unduly influenced by narrow self-interests of powerful non-experts. It also means that #communities of science can and should promulgate their social role model of productive #diversity and #dialectical disagreement of which the general public is unaware. There are just too many “loose screws” outside of science.

Scientist colleagues, check out this fantastic and FREE opportunity from the The Institute for Science & Policy at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science! "The 2023 Symposium explores the ethics of how we communicate scientific findings to serve the public and decision-makers as threats to trust in science continue to mount. At what point does it become an ethical responsibility to share information? How do values and biases impact the way we communicate? Where has scientific information gotten politicized? And what does integrity in scientific research and communication look like in 2023? We will discuss where science has been useful in public policy decisions, where it hasn't, and where we need to rethink our communication strategy to be truly effective."

Lab-Grown (Synthesised Diamonds) are part of scientific progress. Humankind continues to attempt to replicate nature for the benefit of all human consumption. Misusing science to defraud is a criminal act. And must be dealt with the strongest arm of law. Fortunately even the best Lab-Grown diamonds can be detected within 60 seconds. That’s the value scientists bring to us all, as they discover new and yet scientific progress does protect inadvertent misuse. And laws exist to prosecute.

The First Law of Following the Science: Science is followed along a straight and narrow path until it is not. The Second Law of Following the Science: The existence of a consensus about the existence of a consensus is more important than the existence of a consensus. The Third Law of Following the Science: For every PhD expert there exists an equal and opposite PhD expert.

?? Should we dismiss ufologists or conspiracy theorists solely based on the absence of a PhD or their exclusion from an exclusive science club? ??♂?Certainly not. ??However, while maintaining openness to new ideas and diverse perspectives is crucial, we should avoid being excessively open-minded to the extent that our critical thinking is compromised. ??♂?A balanced level of open-mindedness should coexist with scrutiny and critical inquiry. #openmindedness #conspiracytheories

New article by Professor Susan Michie in the Journal of the British Academy: Reflections on UK science – policy relationships in the light of Covid-19 ??Read the article: https://lnkd.in/e6QFxDFp The article discusses the following questions: 1. Was the model (framework) for translating scientific advice to policy-makers as effective as it could have been? 2. Could more have been done to communicate science and its implications for policy and practice to the public? 3. Should scientists speak to policy-makers and the public about matters beyond their particular area of study, reflecting their multidisciplinary working and understanding? 4. Do scientists have a social responsibility to discuss policy implications of scientific evidence and challenge politicians when their statements or behaviour go against prevailing evidence?

Freiburg-based researchers reach final stage of “Cluster of Excellence” funding application process Researchers from the University of Freiburg, the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law, and the Walter Eucken Institute, who applied for Cluster of Excellence funding in the fall of 2023, have reached a crucial stage of the selection process – the submission of a finalized application. An interdisciplinary group consisting of 25 Freiburg-based researchers have applied for funding for a Cluster of Excellence entitled “Constitution as Practice in Times of Transformation” (ConTrans). Within this context, researchers from the humanities and the social sciences are teaming up with the aim of conducting research on international constitutional issues. According to the initial letter of application, “ConTrans (...) brings together, for the first time, perspectives from a wide range of fields – from law and history to literature and psychology – in a comprehensive and long-term analysis of constitutions as social practices. This is the only way to capture variants of constitutionality across space and time.” The group has now reached the crucial stage of the selection process, with their finalized application due in the summer of 2024. Participating researchers include experts from the University of Freiburg based in the Faculty of Philology, the Department of Philosophy, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Theology, and the Faculty of Economics and Behavioral Sciences. They are joined by Ralf Poscher, who heads the Department of Public Law at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law and is also an honorary professor at the University of Freiburg, and Lars Feld, director of the Walter Eucken Institute and professor of economic policy. #Verfassung #Recht #law #Constitution #Research Albert-Ludwigs-Universit?t Freiburg, Walter Eucken Institut #Interdisziplinarit?t ?? ? iStock/Dmitrii_Guzhanin
