Last weekend my wife and I were in Chicago where we enjoyed the food, saw the sights, and even took in a Cubs game at legendary Wrigley Field. We opted to not rent a car and used Uber to get around. At times we waited quite a while for an available driver. There were always taxis around, but I didn't consider using them because I believed Uber is less expensive and more convenient. To be fair, I've never really used taxis, but isn’t that why ride-share was invented in the first place? To give us an alternative? As our trip ended and we prepared to leave for our return flight, I opened the Uber app to find that the next available car was several minutes out and the rate to the airport was over $70. This was almost $50 more than it had cost us to go from the airport to the hotel a few days earlier (Uber uses dynamic pricing based on supply and demand). Given the high price I took a second look at several taxis waiting outside and decided it wouldn't hurt to ask the bellman how much they might be. He said a taxi ride from that hotel would never be more than $50 and we found ourselves climbing into one a few seconds later. This experience reminded me that challenging our assumptions often makes us more effective in whatever we’re trying to accomplish. By doing so here, I learned that while Uber is often cheaper and more convenient, sometimes a taxi can save you almost twenty-five bucks! Uber Ola Have you ever done a QC on your cabs ? Have you ever booked a premium and travelled ? Have you ever checked the eligibility of your drivers ? If yes, I would like to learn about your experience. If not, I would urge you to do so and get the experience of getting into a premium category cab with no AC, smelly interiors, noisy engines, irresponsible cancellations and infinite waiting times after reaching the pickup spot. Let me just take a second to explain why this quote matters. Bolt currently has nine million ride-hailing passengers in the UK. And now Bolt's Policy Director Haya Verwoord Douidri has told us that the mobility giant is eyeing a slice of the island's micromobility market too. If 60% of Bolt's nine?million ride-hailing users were?nudged to Bolt e-scooters in the UK,?that would be a pretty substantial mode shift. “Users requesting a Bolt car would get an in-app notification if their journey is less than three kilometres which would tell them where scooters are in their area," explains Haya. "We saw that 60% of users took our advice for shorter journeys in those cities where we had both ride-hailing and scooters. This is something we’re uniquely positioned to do because of our multimodal offering."
