This what we do!! It is so important to help fill the gaps in our healthcare systems especially as the population demands increase. If in doubt check us out! WGU!
#Utah has fewer nurses per capita than any other state in the nation! Thank you to ABC4 Utah - Utah's CW30 (KTVX/KUCW) for spotlighting that tremendous shortfall and Western Governors University's role educating the next generation of nurses. Over the last few days, it's been a pleasure working with #ABC4's Matt Fontes and Wesley Barton to arrange and execute a series of live shots and features from inside #WGU's state-of-the-art training lab in Salt Lake City. The story they told will surely inspire many to answer the call and pursue careers in #healthcare. And big thanks to my WGU colleagues - including Cherie Lowell, Rylee Krahenbuhl MSN, RN, @Ashlyn Shoemaker, @Kimberly Burrows, and Patrick Murphy - for getting up early and helping make this project successful. And also to Kimberly Kelly-Cortez, Lauren Acree MS, RN, CPN, CHSE, and Anchal Nayyar for your valuable support. Finally - happy #NursesWeek to all the past, present, and future healthcare professionals who work to keep our communities healthy and safe!
Utah has the fewest nurses per capita, and this university is working to change that

I'm so pleased to see the latest copy of The Tennessee Nurse! Included is an article I wrote about the important work being done by the Tennessee Nurses Association (TNA) Government Affairs Committee and staff on behalf of Tennessee's more than 120,000 #RegisteredNurses and #AdvancedPracticeNurses. #Advocacy is critical in today's political landscape, and a large portion of the publication centers on the necessity of #HealthPolicy work, which is sometimes overlooked as we navigate day-to-day challenges in our professional nursing roles. The Tennessee Nurse dedicated a large amount of space to really focus on what is currently being worked on as it relates to #Nursing, including an article provided by TNA's Chief Lobbyist, Garrett Johnson, valuable information about TNA's Political Action Committee (PAC) provided by Dr. Marcia Barnes, and for me, the most impactful article was provided by students at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Many of the student authors had little or no policy experience, and reading their well-reasoned and lived-experience perspectives reminds us as #NurseLeaders that we never know what impact our interactions may have. Their experience at TNA's Day on the Hill made significant impressions upon them and perhaps, may inspire the next Nurse Policy expert or Nurse candidate for elected office! The students, under the expert guidance of Monika M. Do, authored a paper that not only reminds us that our work as nurses may start at the patient's bedside but extends far, far, further than that—in this case, to the steps of the Tennessee Capitol to provide highly specialized knowledge to our elected officials so that decisions can be made in the Tennessee Legislature that are rooted in evidence and best practice. I encourage you to take a moment and check out this quality publication, read the student's perspectives, and ask yourself (because all advocacy involves a clear ask, and this is mine), "How can I advance the cause of nursing today in my practice?" Executive Director at Harvard Business School | Human Capital Sustainability | Case Studies | Franco-German born in Mexico, raised in Africa, Europe & the US
The theme of this Nurses Week is “Nurses Make a Difference!” Its motto, #NursesLightUpTheSky, honors their key role in helping to brighten patient lives. Nurses exemplify what it means to make a difference by triaging sensitive situations, collaborating across disciplines, seeing a person in context, and advocating for patient rights. When we or our loved ones are hurt or scared, a nurse's calm compassion can be a great source of solace. As the pandemic reshaped work, managers found themselves thrust into similar roles of emotional first responders, a role for which none of us were trained. Employee needs have only increased since then. Below, Angela Sigal Poock (who was one of the Harvard University Heroes in 2018) and I share how learning from nurses can remind managers of the key role they play in attempting to make a difference. We also share how to support these caregivers. Like managers, nurses are shock absorbers – pressured from the top by performance imperatives, challenged by turnover and understaffing, and affected by increasing human distress across all demographics. This week and every week, let's honor the dedication of nursing professionals worldwide, especially our five million registered nurses in the US. and the organizations that represent them, such as the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership. Maggie is dedicated to being a tireless champion for nurses. She strives to protect nurses' rights and elevate the nursing profession as a whole.
?? Shoutout to Alex (The Break Nurse) Whitefield, MSN, RN! ?? In the realm of #nursing, where outdated practices persist, Alex is a beacon of innovation. His groundbreaking software tackles a pervasive issue—#nurse breaks. Here's why it matters: When a #nurse assumes care of patients and takes on additional assignments during another #nurses break this is not just a workflow challenge; it's a risk to #patientsafety and legal liability to the nurse and the organization. As stated by a lawyer: "Knowingly and willing taking on an unsafe assignment is the definition of medical malpractice." I've witnessed firsthand how taking on an unsafe assignment even when relieving another nurse for a break compromises response times and exposes both nurses and facilities to potential failures to respond - aka bad outcomes and litigation. Under rules and regulations and codes of ethics, it's the duty and responsibility of all nurses to provide a safe environment for all patients and I am here to remind all #nurses that nothing supersedes the professional license of a provider ever! What Alex has created is revolutionary! It's not just about providing breaks; it's about ensuring continuity of care and mitigating risks - a gift to any organization. When there's a relief #nurse, work continues seamlessly, preventing delays and potential legal repercussions to the nurse and the organization. As a nurse with 23 years of critical care experience and former investigator for a board as well as a civil and administrative expert, I've seen the consequences of inadequate staffing and lack of breaks cost patients their lives and nurses their licenses. Alex's solution isn't just a win for nurses—it's a win for organizations. It saves thousands of dollars in legal fees and fines from governing bodies, improves #nurse satisfaction and retention, and, most importantly, enhances #patientcare and safety. Another HUGE thanks to Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL for connecting us, I love meeting trailblazing nurses. I'm thrilled to connect with Alex at #vive2024! #nurses are taking the helm, advocating for change, and making a real impact on healthcare outcomes and I am proud to stand amongst them.
