Did You Know? Baseball, America’s first sport, was invented in 1845, providing the country with a unique identity and pastime. Later, football was invented in the 1860s, not just as a game but as a tool to teach war strategy and leadership to white college-age men in Ivy League schools. In 1891, basketball was created at the YMCA to teach teamwork to young white boys, shaping them into cooperative and disciplined individuals. These sports were not created for recreation alone but to educate, empower, and prepare young men for leadership. It’s time we use these same sports to educate and empower—not just for fun, but for life. LEAD Center For Youth uses the methodology of sports-based youth development to help Black youth overcome crime, poverty, and racism to ultimately become Major League Players and Major League Citizens.

The recent events detailed in this video serve as a painful reminder of the urgent need for action against racism in our institutions, particularly in our schools, colleges, and universities. The trauma inflicted on the Utah basketball team will have a profound impact. Moving venues does not take erase the deep pain of racism. This incident highlights the critical importance of prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in schools. No student-athlete should ever have to experience such blatant acts of racism, and it is imperative that organizations such as the NCAA and universities take proactive steps to ensure the psychological safety of Black student-athletes who are the most vulnerable within these spaces. As head coach Lynne Roberts shared, the recent incident left everyone at a loss, unsure of how to handle the trauma inflicted on the players. The impact of this egregious act of racism will stay with the players for a lifetime. It’s high time that organizations such as the NCAA and university leadership prioritize creating psychological safety from racism. If they fail to do so, they are sending a harmful message, loud and clear. Racism hurts everyone, and it is incumbent upon all of us to prioritize addressing and eradicating it from our institutions. Silence is is unacceptable, and is no longer an option. #ralindaspeaks #lamade #writer #speaker #consultant #educator #thoughtleader #diversityequityinclusion #DEI #identity #race #culture #studentathletes #colleges #universities #highered #schools #indyschools #workplace #racism #utah #womensbasketball #athletes #studentathletes #marchmadness #ncaa #college #sports #athletics #collegesports

Growing up, school was a safe place. A big part of why I loved school so much is because people told me I was good at it. Knowing I was good at school made me feel like I belonged there. Is school still a safe place for children? Well, it depends on the school, and unfortunately, it depends on the child. In reality, we all have biases that cause us to perceive Black and Brown students in a certain light. The average American belief about black and brown children can include: ???? They’re behind ???? They’re not as smart ???? They don’t come from strong family backgrounds ???? They have a lack of support at home My mission is to dismantle these beliefs about the ability of Black and Brown students in America because I believe that when given support, guidance, and opportunity, these students will PERFORM on-par, and reach their highest potential. This is my calling. This is my duty. Share this post with a fellow educator that wants to dismantle this belief. #schoolleaders #edleadership #whenbrowngirlslead

For #PhilanthropyThursday we want to highlight Kids First Chicago ?? Kids First Chicago helps families understand education and policy data so that they can navigate to and advocate for high-quality public schools for their children and communities. They do this through direct services that include one-on-one support, informational events, leadership development opportunities, and community-based convenings and presentations. Their policy priorities align with issues identified by parent leaders in their network; their analysis of publicly available data related to education, census, and life outcomes; and strategic opportunities presented to K1C where parents are invited to the decision-making table on an emerging topic or issue of significance to education in Chicago. They aim to create a system where every kid defies gravity—a system that ensures equitable access to quality schools, funding, and transparent information in all communities. https://lnkd.in/ekqxgVSB

?? Let's challenge stereotypes and celebrate the truth! ?? "The perception that Black players were not smart enough to play in the major league was particularly ironic given that more Negro League players had a college education than Major Leaguers." ?? An estimated 40 percent of Negro League players had college educations, with many hailing from historically Black colleges and universities. ?? Let's acknowledge the resilience, intellect, and talent that powered the Negro Leagues, paving the way for equality in sports and beyond. ???? #NegroLeagues #BlackExcellence #EducationMatters ?? Miller, Ed.S. is giving a quick webinar regarding STATE EDUCATION ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEMS and why it might be a good idea for you to understand them before you engage with school or district leadership. This isn't something you want to miss.

February isn’t just Black History month. February is typically the time when schools/districts start discussing budget allocations. Budgets determine resources (both human and capital). Resources determine the school’s capacity. And that capacity is used to meet student needs. If student needs are greater than the capacity can accommodate, there is a gap. And that gap is often filled by partners. Do you work with K-12 schools by providing STEM programming and resources? Do you manage corporate social responsibility efforts that fund STEM initiatives? You might want to start having discussions with K-12 leaders now before key decisions have been made. You might have noticed the diversity of the female players in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The head coaches and athletic administrators on their campuses are a lot less diverse. This report from the University of Southern California Race and Equity Center takes a look at the makeup of each team in the Sweet 16 and the overall diversity of each campus. The percentage of Black students, faculty, athletic directors, and coaches is low at all schools competing at Division 1 level, and with the recent elimination of DEI programs in states with conservative legislatures and the threat of more DEI bans in other states to come, Black athletes could soon experience even less representation and culturally competent support than they find on their campuses now.
