Front Pages from All America 8/25
Every day, I comb through the front pages of all the daily papers in America (provided via?The Freedom Forum ) and will highlight 5-10 front page items that have national significance, with my quick commentary
The Decatur Daily (Alabama)
THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Hatton's Sellers Only Female Football Player in Lawrence County
WHY IT MATTERS: Newspapers are looking for eye-opening stories about the new high school football season.
THE TAKEAWAY: This story, complete with a large front page picture, truly is eye-opening as the young woman in question isn't playing kicker or even QB, but a tough position on the interior line.
The Arkansas Democrat Gazette (Arkansas)
THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Schools Dismiss Early because of Extreme Heat
WHY IT MATTERS: As usual, dozens of schools across the country are forced to shut down during their first few weeks of the year due to heat.
THE TAKEAWAY: It's almost poetic justice that decisions to start school in the hottest parts of the summer to accommodate adults and budgets end up inconveniencing adults and hurting budgets because it's still too darn hot to start school.
The Napa Valley Register (California)
THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Bill Could Restrict Watering Ornamental Turf
领英推荐
WHY IT MATTERS: California is just one state trying to deal with water shortages.
THE TAKEAWAY: Ornamental lawns that no one ever actually uses are a problem for reasons beyond just watering. There are housing space issues as well. It would be nice if we culturally started to just accept a non-lawn culture other than being forced into it by government rules.
The San Francisco Chronicle (California)
THE FRONT PAGE STORY: S.F. Deploys Cars as Bait
WHY IT MATTERS: Car thefts and break-ins have been running rampant in San Francisco.
THE TAKEAWAY: This sounds like an excellent tactic and it will probably make a difference as long as those arrested in the act of trying to steal cars aren't eventually released with no bail.
The Norwalk Hour (Connecticut)
THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Police: Officer Resigns after Probe Finds Falsified Reports
WHY IT MATTERS: Multiple phony traffic ticket scandals are plaguing the state's police force.
THE TAKEAWAY: Ah yes, the fallacy that police are on the roads looking for speeders, etc. for public safety. If that were the case, we'd need far fewer cops and far less spending on police infrastructure.
