How Volunteerism Can Drive Nonprofit Collaboration and Community Impact Dear Friends and Colleagues, Throughout my career in the nonprofit sector, I have dedicated myself to supporting various organizations whose reach and impact extend locally, nationally, and globally. My journey has been deeply enriched by my long-standing commitment as a volunteer for numerous causes, allowing me to witness firsthand the transformative power of community engagement. Recently, I came across an inspiring article, "Strengthen Your Business By Putting Your Values Into Action," written by Kendra Davenport, President and CEO of Easterseals, and published by Forbes Nonprofit Council. Community contributions vs. community partnerships?? ? Companies make contributions to nonprofit organizations all the time. The nonprofit asks for money or another kind of support. The company agrees to provide it. The nonprofit executes its program and thanks the company. Is that a community partnership? ? We say no. That’s a community contribution. Which begs the question: what is a community partnership then, and how is it different? ? At #onpurposesquared, we believe community partnerships go much deeper and share certain characteristics: ? Common goals - Both partners are interested in working together to achieve a specific goal in the community. They are each willing to provide time, expertise and whatever else is needed to achieve the goal. ? Mutual respect - Both partners admire each other for all the resources that are brought to the table in support of the goal. From time, talent, and ideas, to volunteers, supplies and financial resources, trust is both built and experienced. ? Shared leadership - Both partners put the community before self-interest and work hard to solve problems together. Power is shared. Failures are joint. Successes are celebrated, together. ? ??Yesterday, I was completely taken by surprise!?? An appreciation service was held by members of Livingwell Church. Their heartfelt recognition of my commitment to serving both the community and the church as their Senior Leader deeply moved me. The pictures tell a story of my shock and embarrassment of the anecdotes and stories shared during the service. But I am considerably humbled to be honored in this way with message from home and abroad. It was a complete surprise I had no idea they spent weeks organising this. This moment reminded me of the incredible value of working together for a greater purpose. Whether through local charities, nonprofits, or volunteer work, the impact we create often goes beyond what we see. Also reminded of the importance of giving people flowers while they are here, don’t wait until they are gone. Business does benefit considerably by enabling employees to volunteer numerous reports and studies demonstrate this. Encouraging employees to volunteer isn’t just good for communities—it’s a strategic move for businesses. Companies that invest in volunteerism see returns in employee satisfaction, brand loyalty, and long-term growth. To all who dedicate their time, skills, and hearts to serving others, remember this: “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention” (Oscar Wilde). Let’s continue to lift each other up, celebrate our efforts, and inspire more people to join in making a difference.
