Sustainability in beauty is increasingly about how ingredients are sourced. Thanks to biotechnology, we're witnessing a significant shift. By mimicking natural processes, scientists are developing sustainable alternatives to traditionally sourced ingredients. Take squalane, originally sourced from shark liver but now sustainably produced from sugarcane. This innovative method replicates the molecular structure of shark-derived squalane, eliminating the ethical and environmental drawbacks associated with its traditional sourcing. This approach showcases how biotechnology can fulfill the demand for beauty products that do not compromise on performance or principles. How do you think biotechnology will further transform the beauty industry? Are there other industries that could benefit from similar biotechnological advances? Have you spotted us in this Vogue Business article? Our CEO, Greg Altman, discusses the complexities of sustainability in biotech and underscores the need for skincare brands to be discerning when choosing eco-friendly ingredients for their products. Many bioengineered ingredients are made with unsustainable fermentation methods. Fermentation relies heavily on massive amounts of sugar that usually comes from industrial agriculture (which uses carbon-intensive petrochemical fertilizers). At Evolved By Nature, we create bioactive peptides that are naturally derived and produced using renewable resources and energy, offering a more sustainable solution. I was part of the jury that brought together dozens of participants from Southwestern Europe (Portugal, Spain, and Italy) in the city of Valladolid, Spain, on November 26th, 27th, and 28th. The Biorural project is an initiative promoted under the European Circular Bioeconomy Challenge, of which the Biomass for Energy Center is a part. This event gathered startups, entrepreneurs, specialists, and academics from the three countries to foster innovative solutions in the circular bioeconomy, promoting sustainability and the valorization of underutilized resources. During the three-day event, participants had the opportunity to engage in personalized mentoring sessions, interactive roundtables, and success story presentations in an excellent networking and convivial atmosphere. Among the highlights were keynote speeches from pioneering companies such as Spain's BIOLIZA and Portugal's SCIVEN, which shared their experiences and best practices in the sector. Out of the 12 innovative projects in the competition, the first prize was awarded to AgroBioTex, a Portuguese initiative led by young researchers from the University of Coimbra, which transforms agricultural waste and sheep wool into eco-friendly textiles, reducing solvent use by 80% and replacing synthetic dyes with sustainable alternatives. Second place went to the Spanish project Protiberia, which converts mushroom substrate waste into high-value protein-rich animal feed using the insect Tenebrio molitor, promoting waste reduction and sustainable protein production. The third place was awarded to an Italian project offering a technological solution that gasifies wood chips to produce electricity, heat, and biochar without ash emissions, contributing to the energy autonomy of remote mountainous areas. The winning projects will benefit from specialized coaching provided by the Science Park of the University of Valladolid, enabling their ideas to reach the market and generate a positive impact. The initiative was organized by AVEBIOM (Spain), AIEL (Italy), CBE, and the University of Coimbra (Portugal), with support from the Valladolid Agency for Innovation and Economic Development (IDEVA) and the Science Park of the University of Valladolid. The next challenge will take place in Brussels in May 2025, where these finalists, representing Southwestern Europe, will compete against winners from other European regions.

In our conversations with brands, we often emphasize the need for safe, beneficial ingredients. A common misconception is that "natural" equals "safe," which isn’t always true. The article below highlights the importance of finding a balance between natural and synthetic ingredients, which is central to our fragrance formulations at Lucent Labs. Biotechnology is revolutionizing beauty by producing lab-grown ingredients that not only mimic but can also enhance their natural counterparts, and helping shift the industry away from petroleum-derived ingredients. While consumer perceptions can sometimes lean towards skepticism regarding biotech innovations, there’s a tremendous opportunity to shift the narrative to embrace the benefits of these ingredients. How? Education is key. By promoting transparency and providing clear ingredient lists- including fragrance- we can help consumers recognize the value of safe synthetic ingredients and how they contribute to the products we all know and love. Seven standards of OKRs were set for each product, and these can be summarized as follows. Objective1: Drive Product Excellence and Innovation Across All Lines . We will implement and optimize production processes tailored for each product to ensure high-quality standards, including the preparation for automated equipment. . We will leverage technologies such as nanotechnology and advanced materials processing (e.g., stone powders, distilled plant extracts) to innovate our product offerings. . Through research and development cooperation, we aim to identify substances that combat skin aging and secure related patents. Objective 2: Increase Market Reach and Enhance Customer Engagement . We will increase awareness and educate about the unique benefits and features of each product line, emphasizing their natural and sustainable aspects. . We will leverage strategic marketing initiatives to naturally extend our reach to a broader audience, including existing customers with skin conditions, and build a community around sustainable health and healthcare. (This includes depression treatment with aromatherapy and naturopathy.) . We will develop online systems and enhance farm community engagement and collaboration, leveraging digital tools to interact more effectively with diverse customers. Objective3: Strengthen Sustainability and Economic Viability . We will use stone dust, a byproduct from the vegetable oil refining process, as crop fertilizer and incorporate recycled materials in products like cinnamon water to reduce waste (e.g., using cinnamon residues). . Through collaborations with the government, we will revitalize the elderly community, expand environmental campaigns in underprivileged areas, and secure joint funding. . We will optimize programs that link our own community campaigns (such as farms and herb production) to enhance economic sustainability and market expansion. #SustainableInnovation #GreenTech #CommunityEngagement #NaturalProducts #HealthcareInnovation #EconomicSustainability #CorporateResponsibility #Teamwork #LeadershipInSustainability #TechForGood
