#Teams is better than #Slack. Here is the #CTO perspective: ?? Both do a pretty similar job of what they are supposed to do - messaging, calling, video, user management, channels. Other features are just cherries on top. With that in mind, here is how a CTO would compare these two products: ?? Pricing and what you get for that. - Slack costs €6.75 per month (paid yearly). - Teams costs $4.00 per month (paid yearly). P.S. let's assume € is pretty close to $. Teams is slightly cheaper. But no one buys Teams alone. You buy the whole MS package for $6.00 per month (paid yearly) and get 1TB of cloud storage, Teams, and many other productivity apps. So for the same price, with Teams (I mean Microsoft), I have covered all the basic needs of a company. With Slack, I can't do that. ?? Popularity and user experience. Both tools are pretty popular. Teams is more popular in a corporate environment (because of the whole MS package), but I see many startups using Teams as well. Regarding user experience Teams straight up s**k compared to Slack. Slack has made their UX best-in-class and there is even no comparison between these two products. ?? Service stability and updates. Teams was a mess. Teams is still a mess in 2024. I haven't experienced so many video conferencing problems with other apps (Zoom, Slack, Google Meet) as I have experienced with Teams. Slack innovates much more than Teams. For example, rolling out the LLM feature to summarize long conversations into bullet points. Teams has chosen a more conservative approach. ?? The summary - I still chose Teams. Wait what? ?? It is simple. Even though Slack beats Teams in service stability, innovation, user experience, and features, it doesn't beat Teams so much, that pricing wouldn't be a factor. For the same price with #Microsoft, I can get the whole virtual workspace including messaging, calling, video, email, calendar, productivity apps, cloud, etc. And that is a win for me.

Interesting on cost and adoption Teams wins - enterprise wide functionality vs specific use case - Teams wins over Slack. But slack is the better experience and has been more innovative but is more expensive. This explains a lot - is corporate IT all about bundling the most functionality into a few enterprise wide platforms benefiting from economies of breadth and scale financially and coping with the experience and less fit for purpose consequences. Can experience and innovation ever out trump cost and functionally of bundling into enterprise wide solutions? If the business case is all about IT costs and “good enough” then I guess not - however from a broader business perspective and frustrations, time lost, quality of ways of working are there unquantified broader business benefits that would justify the increased costs - probably not - as this would come with increasing technical conplexity too that would give greater issues to IT. So yes there are better alternatives but when all things are considered maybe “good enough” and “economies of scale” is fine - but don’t let #microsoft off the hook - they can do more to improve their products and make the colleague experience better #corporateIT #costmatters #standardisationmatters #experimencematters
