An estimated 100 square kilometers of the #BalticSea is a an #ecological #wasteland with #nolife below 80 meters' depth, making it one of the most polluted seas in the world. It was an honor to present today at the #GOMCON2024, #Tampa in the mitigating harmful algal blooom session. I presented some key findings about the work we have been doing on #Lake #Okeechobee #Watershed trying to investigate strategies to reduce #phosphorus and #nitrogen loads to the lake, as well as coupling that with a Lake model (LOONE) that I have developed to simulate water balance and nutrient dynamics in Lake Okeechobee and further explore optimal discharges from the Lake to #Caloosahatchee #river and #StLucie #canal to mitigate #HABs.

Today is #WorldOceansDay, and I am delighted to share our review paper (also, my first publication! ) entitled, “Trace metals in Phytoplankton: Requirements, Function, and Composition in Harmful Algal Blooms". Our work, together with my colleagues at UP Marine Science Institute, provides a review of #metal and #phytoplankton interactions, with a specific emphasis on pertinent information on the influence of #trace nutrients on #growth, #toxin production, and other underlying mechanisms related to the dynamics of #HABS. This review paper sets the stage for #metallomics research in the Philippines and provides new insights and recommendations for future research, for us to understand algal bloom dynamics and ocean productivity in general. Global efforts have evolved and I am optimistic that advancements in our technology (including space tech/Earth Observation) will revolutionize marine science, enabling us to protect and sustainably use the planet's largest ecosystem, our #oceans. ?? I'm excited to share our article, "Under Ice Plankton and Lipid Dynamics in a Subarctic Lake" in the Journal of Plankton Research. This collaborative study with Eva Leu, Per-Arne Amundsen, Raul Primicerio, Martin Kainz, and Amanda Poste explores how plankton communities and lipid compositions shift in a subarctic lake during the ice-covered season. ???? Our research revealed that despite low light and cold temperatures, the under-ice plankton community remains active, particularly in lipid production, which can play a critical role in sustaining the food web. These findings emphasize the importance of winter processes for understanding overall ecosystem dynamics, with implications for both natural and aquaculture systems in cold regions. "Hyperaccumulator plants are able to tolerate extremely high concentrations of metals/metalloids in the soil in which they grow and to accumulate high concentrations in their shoots. To date, a total of 31 hyperaccumulator plant species have been identified in the Balkans, the centre of diversity and speciation in the European flora, which is particularly rich in ultramafic areas. A further 8 species have yet to be confirmed through additional studies... The existence of hyperaccumulators of Tl and Zn is of particular interest because very few species worldwide accumulate these elements. Multiple metal hyperaccumulation was found in Nocaea kovastii, as the hyperaccumulation of Zn was found in this species in addition to Ni, the primary accumulated element. Metal hyperaccumulation is discussed in therms of phylogenetic relationships and species distributions, with special attention to their systematics, the detection and recognition of new hyperaccummulating species and the possibilities for their future practical applications in phytotechnologies."
