The Ukrainian Army has begun deploying the Guardian 1.5 remote weapon station, developed by the Spanish company Escribano Mechanical & Engineering, on at least two types of armored vehicles: the TOA M113, with Spain having donated over fifty units, and the domestically produced Kozak-5 wheeled vehicle. Recent broadcasts by Army TV, including a post shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his official Facebook account, have showcased the Guardian 1.5 mounted on these vehicles. Prior to these disclosures, visual evidence of the Guardian 1.5 had been scarce, despite earlier leaks indicating the Ukrainian Army's acquisition of turrets from the Spanish manufacturer. The displayed footage reveals details such as the turret outfitted with a Browning M2 machine gun on the TOA, along with the operator’s control screen within the armored vehicle. The acquisition of the Guardian 1.5 systems by Ukraine was conducted under a contract that was not publicly disclosed, as confirmed by Infodefensa.com. This contract, whose quantity of units remains unspecified, predates and is distinct from the recent agreement between Spain and Ukraine signed in May, which includes a comprehensive weapons package for 2024 valued at 1 billion euros. The Guardian 1.5 is a remote weapon station equipped with a gyro-stabilized system that enables 360-degree firing while the vehicle is in motion. It includes day and infrared cameras, a laser rangefinder, and notable features such as target tracking capability, integration with GPS, combat management systems (BMS), and external sensors including C4I. The turret also incorporates a training simulation system and is designed for low maintenance. Weighing less than 185 kg without weapons or ammunition, the Guardian 1.5 supports a range of weaponry including 5.56x45 mm, 7.62x51 mm, 12.7x99 mm NATO, and 14.5 mm KPVP machine guns, as well as the MK19 40 mm grenade launcher. Additionally, it is equipped with smoke launchers for short and medium-range self-defense. Confronted with high-intensity scenarios, operational needs are evolving, demanding versatile vehicles capable of adapting to various threats. Arquus addresses this by introducing the prototype of its new multi-role armoured vehicle, which integrates high payload capacity, superior protection, and medium-calibre armament, all while ensuring excellent mobility. MAV’Rx is a genuine contact vehicle. This multi-mission versatile platform can transport a combat group, conducting medical evacuation missions, and providing direct or indirect fire support. MAV’Rx benefits from Arquus’ globally recognised expertise in mobility. Equipped with independent wheel suspensions and a 400hp engine coupled with a 7-speed automatic gearbox, it boasts impeccable performance. It has all the attributes (VPG, run-flat tires, etc.) that make it an all-terrain vehicle, perfectly at ease in any environment. The vehicle meets the highest protection standards (according to STANAG 4569) and benefits from Arquus’ long-standing internal expertise in this field: MAV’Rx supports the combat group in close contact. In its troop transport version, the MAV’Rx can accommodate ten people along with their equipment in optimal habitability conditions. Boarding and disembarking are facilitated by electrically assisted doors and a rear ramp. The design of its cabin allows easy communication among personnel, and the thermal comfort is designed for the most extreme conditions. Control and information are distributed to reduce the cognitive load on the crew. For the commander, the Battlenet system provides better overall tactical awareness and shorter response times. MAV’Rx is designed as a true contact system. As such, it can carry medium-calibre armament. At Eurosatory, it is presented with JCD’s 25mm turret. It can also be equipped with other types of armament (self-defence type HORNET turret) or other weapon systems. As a system integration expert, Arquus makes MAV’Rx a vehicle capable of accommodating many sensors and effectors, making it suited for high-intensity scenarios. From its conception, MAV’Rx has taken battlefield maintenance constraints into account. Thus, its powerpack can be replaced in two hours.
