I just wanted to share a few insights from a recent article regarding workplace violence prevention strategies for Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) in healthcare. The article emphasizes proactive measures like fostering a supportive work culture, implementing training programs, and maybe more importantly, leveraging technology to address and prevent incidents effectively. Duress badges are highlighted as crucial components in this prevention landscape. Centegix's CrisisAlert badges provide frontline staff with a discreet means to summon immediate assistance during emergencies, complementing comprehensive safety protocols and training programs to ensure a swift and effective response to potential threats. #healthcare #workplaceviolenceprevention #duressbadgeswork #Centegix
Here's How CNOs Can Prevent Workplace Violence and Keep Nurses Psychologically Safe

Navigating the Risks of Workplace Violence in Healthcare As nurses, we often find ourselves in challenging situations, navigating the delicate balance between providing care and ensuring our safety. Unfortunately, workplace violence is a reality many healthcare professionals face. Sometimes, it's due to patients with conditions like dementia or Alzheimer's, but there are also instances where individuals know exactly what they're doing. Recently, I heard about an incident involving a colleague whom a patient attacked. This incident is a stark reminder that violence can happen anywhere, not just in hospitals. Anyone working with the public can be at risk. In nursing school, we must be taught how to handle such situations. However, here are a few ways we can protect ourselves: ? Minimize Personal Information Exposure: We often wear name tags with only our first names to prevent patients from finding us on social media or even stalking us. ? Avoid Wearing Items Around the Neck: Stethoscopes or lanyards can become weapons. Many nurses choose to keep their stethoscopes in their pockets instead or wear name tags, which can come off quickly. ? Stay Alert and Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and the behavior of those around you. Trust your instincts if something feels off. ? Use De-escalation Techniques: De-escalation training can be invaluable, helping to calm a situation before it escalates into violence. ? Have a Safety Plan: Know your workplace's safety protocols, including how to call for help or exit the area quickly. Never let yourself be cornered, and keep your back to the door. Let's support each other by raising awareness and advocating for safer work environments. If you have other tips for staying safe, please share them in the comments. Together, we can create a safer workplace for all healthcare professionals. With 20 years of nursing experience, I’m here to help attorneys uncover the truth within medical records. Let's shine a light on the details that matter. Julie Schroeder Navigational Legal Nurse [email protected]

the CATCH-22 Driving Non-action on Accelerating Healthcare Workplace Violence In the Becker's Healthcare’s Hospital Review article by Erica Carbajal, she reports on some hospital systems that say that they have responded to healthcare worker safety issues by installing weapons detection systems. The article also notes that, as workplace violence requires a multi-pronged approach, some hospitals have “increased investments in de-escalation training for staff, provided employees with duress buttons, and adopted patient codes of conduct”. Leaders from the systems that have taken these steps report - for this article - that they are not seeing the anticipated resistance to these measures by patients and families that have been anticipated by healthcare leaders. However, though the article mentions ‘surveys’ - it does not QUANTIFY any data on increased acceptance of these protective efforts. The continued escalation in workplace violence has recently led organizations such as the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Nurses Association, the Emergency Nurses Association to again urge Congress to pass bills that are already before them to strengthen protections for workers in the healthcare industry. MY TAKE Such requests to Congress are a “Catch-22” condition -and may be DOOMED TO FAIL! Many of our National and State Senators and Congressmen are stridently opposed to any measures that would increase Federal bureaucracy, power and Federal debt. Therefore providing increased power and funding to Federally-backed ?organizations such as ‘OSHA’ or ‘Joint Commission’ - can be ‘non-starters’ in Congress. Yet, hospital leaders report that they are OK with providing REQUIRED violence prevention measures (even with the costs - as noted in this article) AS long as there is a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD - and all competing hospitals are required to adopt the same measures – thus removing the fear of loss of “MARKET SHARE” - as patients are perceived as migrating to less entry-regulated facilities . Thus the CATCH-22 - as it would take FEDERAL level requirements to create NATIONAL standards for hospital workplace safety - that healthcare leaders say they want. One long term answer for this dilemma would be large RESEARCH studies that could answer questions about exactly what safety measures work the best. Until that time, we will continue to see little movement in healthcare workplace safety, and continued migration of doctors, nurses, and other workers out of healthcare - to safer workplaces – thus accelerating lack of access to timely healthcare.
