At the end of July we brought together an amazing group of practitioners, students and researchers with a shared focus on the socio-economic dynamics of utility-scale renewable energy in South Africa’s Just Energy Transition. The event was a collaboration between Centre for Sustainability Transitions, Initiative for Social Performance in Renewable Energy (INSPIRE) and POWER FUTURES LAB. Our key aim for the workshop was to explore how to develop the academic capacity to support the renewable energy industry and deepen community impact. The gathering was significant for affirming that a commitment to transformative research calls for researchers and practitioners alike, to engage in new and collaborative ways - which often goes against the grain of how these 'science-policy-practices' interactions take place. Some key insights and questions from the day included: - Growing the skills and capacities for transformative research; what does this mean in our South African context, and in our higher education institutions? - Facilitating collaborative approaches to research design (especially for postgrad students); how can research projects be shaped around real world questions? - Exploring ethical research practices; can we go beyond compliance? - Investing in media training for broader science communication; how can students and researchers be more comfortable sharing their work? - Strengthening ongoing exchange and networking for scholars and students; how do we stay connected? - Embedding practice into curricula more strongly; how can voices and experiences of practitioners be brought into formal learning spaces? ?? We are incredibly proud to have been named alongside Google and Siemens as one of Fast Company’s Top Five Companies of the Year in its World Changing Ideas awards for 2024. Fast Company honoured us in two categories – both the Company of the Year category and the Climate category – highlighting Methane Watch, our flagship product, as a key technology helping to solve issues relating to the climate crisis. Methane Watch continues to track potent greenhouse gas emissions and deliver actionable insights to countries and companies worldwide, as well as international bodies. That is giving decision-makers the information they badly need to take decisive – and effective – climate action. In both categories, we found ourselves this year alongside some fantastic organisations: not just Google and Siemens, but Seed Health and Boston Metal. These companies are doing outstanding work, from using AI to optimise traffic lights, to using renewable energy to produce steel and other metals. We may have missed out on the top spot this year, but we’re proud to be named among the top five in both categories, and grateful to Fast Company for recognising our work. In the end, what matters most is that thinkers and doers across the planet keep working hard and dreaming up new solutions to help us confront the challenge of climate change.
