It got me thinking though, looking at this photo, while there can only be 3 on the podium. ?? Personally, I can only see one line of champions (separated by less than a second between all of them) to define who is the top of the top ?? It got me thinking... what if we all had this champion mindset in sales? These athletes have prepared their whole lives for this moment, but the last 4 years leading up to the Olympics, they must be consistent in how they train, put in those extra hours of practice, keep a winning mindset through many challenges. Watching USMNT last night play ? , I am admittedly no expert and watch only when they play the World Cup our tournaments like Copa. What interested me the most was the immediate conversation after about leadership/ coaching. Disapointting result to not only lose, but not advancing past the group stage. The fallout began Monday night with U.S. soccer fans winding down Arrowhead Stadium ramps and chanting: “Fire Gregg! Fire Gregg!” Quick long story short background... last world cup in?Qatar, the team overachieved and leaned into their youth,?reached the Round of 16, and left believing they could “be giants eventually.” The U.S. men’s national team, at the time, was rising and people said we were entering the "golden era"... Berhalter was?rehired a year ago?after a six-month void following the exit from the World Cup, Matt Crocker, the new US soccer technical director lured from English football, adopted a?“multifaceted evaluation mechanism”?with “advanced data analytics, sophisticated metrics, and cutting-edge hiring methods to profile and rank each candidate.” They conducted an expensive search firm and the hiring of the head coach was akin to conducting an executive search to appoint a vice-president of Ford or General Electric. Berhalter didn’t even coach the team at last summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup because he was busy attending?“big picture”?long-term strategy meetings. (Wait hiring a big consulting firm never happens in healthcare or sales..?!) Players really like him, leadership and all the measures show signifcant progress leading up to this tournament as anyone in sports knows the majority of the work is day to day behind close doors where you practice, game plan, the process is key... but... Sales & Sports have a parallel there in my mind it's a fine line of results vs process... if the outbound sequences are getting clicks/ opens but not booking demos, if the CRM/ dashboards are immaculate and give amazing insights for pipeline reviews but deals aren't closing... if our CSM process looks great & is documented but customers are churning... “When it comes to soccer, it’s one of the few things, from the men’s side, not the women’s side because they’ve been carrying us for years, from the men’s side, that we have not been the best and we’re trying to get there and people don’t care. People don’t care what it looks like on the field. Why Messi Won't Be A Great Coach and why your sales rockstars may not be the best people to coach? Lionel Messi is one of the greatest soccer players ever. But being an elite player doesn't automatically make you a great coach. The reality is, Messi's quiet personality and shy nature likely won't translate well to being a motivational coach. Remember in 2014 when he was supposed to give a speech to fire up the Argentina team before the World Cup final? He was too shy, so Mascherano had to step in. That's not exactly leadership material. Beyond that, top players like Messi process the game differently than everyone else. The decisions, movements, and instincts that make them elite are almost subconscious. It's really hard to then teach and explain that intuitive genius to others. How do you clearly communicate to players exactly when and where they should move or make a certain play...when for you it's always just been a natural feeling? The great players' brilliance is often untranslatable. And that's why so many legend players struggle as coaches when they retire. Messi's reserved personality plus his instinctive, hard-to-teach genius means he probably won't make a great coach, despite being arguably the best player ever. Sometimes the traits that make you elite at one thing can actually hold you back in another arena. Evaluating coaching potential has to go beyond just player accomplishments. Most companies will promote the top SDR making the same mistake. Don't be most companies. When I train, I break it down so much a kid could understand.
