The data ecosystem is seeing increasing competitive war mongering as both #Snowflake and #Databricks are on an intense acquisition spree. In the recently concluded #SnowflakeSummit2024, Snowflake made a big announcement around "Polaris", a unified catalog that works on #Iceberg formats. Within a day, #Databricks made an announcement about acquiring "Tabular" for 1bn USD. Tabular is a managed Iceberg software company founded by the creators of Iceberg from Netflix. Such acquisitions from two giants in the space of Data Processing is certainly stirring the pot in the Data ecosystem. Data Platforms are like cars — everybody has one, the only question is which one you have !! Just like in owning a car, the preference for features and functionalities determine the kind of car you want to own, likewise, Data Platforms stack up based on the functionalities they offer. Sample the below. 1. Fast and easy to use Data warehousing/lake-housing is like Speed and comfort of the drive 2. Effective Data Catalog is like Ambient Car monitoring System 3. Good dashboarding is like shiny, comfortable, ergonomically engineered leather seats 4. Running Data Science and AI Workloads is like going off-road, exploring challenging navigations and excelling along rough terrains 5. Iceberg support indicates support for hybrid / electric option which is fast becoming a default requirement across platforms. Thus, just like in the cars ecosystem, the Data Platform ecosystem is seeing shifting needs and dynamic evolution of requirements and the competitive juice flowing across Snowflake and Databricks is the gravy that will only turn spicier as we move ahead. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the Snowflake World Tour 2024 in Toronto, and it was filled with great insights into data, AI, and modern architectures! I’ve been working closely with Snowflake and leading projects utilizing some of their most advanced AI capabilities to create efficiency and improve processes. The results have been outstanding, thanks to the collaboration with an incredible team from Snowflake. ?? Here are my top three takeaways: 1?? Top Machine Learning Use Cases Whether it’s sales & marketing (lead scoring, churn prediction) or supply chain (anomaly detection, predictive maintenance), the event highlighted how ML is revolutionizing multiple sectors, improving decision-making and optimizing processes making it much more accessible and easier to build ML models. 2?? Building the Modern Data Architecture From data ingestion to security and governance, building a robust architecture is key to empowering organizations to get the most from their data. 3?? Embracing AI The partnership between Snowflake and platforms like Azure or easily connecting to any LLM is creating powerful ecosystems for databases, AI, and analytics (I like to call the big three). This collaboration will definitely help organizations scale and innovate faster, all while maintaining governance and data integrity.
