We’re just under two weeks out from the weirdest “holiday” in the US. It’s especially weird if you’re selling information and knowledge online. Most of Black Friday is built around the idea of discounts, and I personally never want to discount my products. I don’t ever want to put the thought in someone’s head that, instead of buying, they can just wait for a sale. (and it just doesn’t feel quite fair to the folks who bought at full price, especially not if they bought recently) Here’s what I’m doing instead. P.S. SMASHD ???? The Anti-Black Friday winners, in my opinion. While everyone else is chasing discounts and conversions, SMASHD flips the script entirely. Instead of running deals, they’re using Black Friday to thank their competitors — Liquid Death, Recess, and poppi ? for “graciously tolerating” their rise in the non-alcoholic beverage vertical Bold. Different. And a marketing masterstroke. They’re essentially saying: “We’re so confident in our brand that we’ll give you the spotlight for a day.” This is how you stand out in a crowded Black Friday marketplace: ? by doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing. Black Friday is over - but what about December? There’s much more money to be made in this period too. Most brands don’t utilize this period. This is your time to stand out. You always need to show up for your subscribers, whether on email or sms. For this Swedish brand we’ve launched a “daily deal” until December 24. ???The interest is already there for the first deals that’s been sent. Make something new and exciting when 9/10 brands do a big sitewide sale. It gets boring very quickly. Cut through the noice. But remember everything shouldn’t just be about a new promotion. That’s why we’re also sending emails out regarding: - Thanking BFCM customers for their purchase (dec 6) - Brand mission and vision for year 2025 (dec 12) - Last chance for christmas shopping (dec 17) - Merry Christmas from the founder (dec 24) - 2024 recap (dec 27) Show up for your subscribers, they expect to hear from you.
