FORGING A FRAMEWORK FOR A CAREER IN SHIPBUILDING Introducing Keaton, a welder, a footy fan, and this year’s SA Apprentice of the Year. Our apprenticeship program is not just about getting hands-on experience, it’s also about building a cohort of people to play their part in sustaining Australia’s submarines. Keaton was nominated for SA’s Apprentice of the Year by team leader, Adam, who says “it was his work ethic and strong relationships that stood out to me.” Let’s hear from Keaton: What’s it like being the shipbuilding industry? “It’s pretty cool to work on submarines every day, while you could do a welding job at lots of places, there’s nothing like working on a sub.” How did it feel to have formal recognition of your work? “I’m proud, but at the end of the day it’s a team effort. It’s important to remember that it takes lots of people with different skills to complete the job.” Do you have any advice for people thinking about an apprenticeship? “Give it a go. Sunroc's registered apprenticeship program has helped to build their workforce while supporting the company's need for trained diesel mechanics.
