Alert: The Growing Danger of Polysubstance Abuse in 2024 Overdose deaths involving methamphetamine, psychostimulants, and synthetic opioids like fentanyl continue to rise. A critical factor in many of these cases is polysubstance abuse, where multiple substances are used together, often leading to unpredictable and amplified effects. The CDC reports that over half of all overdose deaths now involve multiple substances. This trend highlights the need for increased awareness and preventive measures in tackling this complex and evolving challenge. #SubstanceAbuseAwareness #OverdosePrevention #HealthAlert #ValleySpringRecovery

Substance Abuse Treatment Leader | Community Health Advocate | Member, Delaware Behavioral & Mental Health Commission
Our education and awareness programs reduce the onset of substance misuse. Our treatment programs help those with substance use disorder recover. And we continue to advocate for compassionate and effective policies to address the drug crisis. As communities, agencies, and policymakers work together, we can counter the opioid crisis. But we also have to deal with the here and now, reducing the damage that substance misuse can cause. That’s why harm reduction programs, including our Syringe Services Program, along with Narcan rescue kits, drug testing strips, and ongoing outreach and referral, are so vitally important. https://ow.ly/mYvc50RYN81 #HarmReduction #SubstanceUseDisorder #Outreach

Opioids can be a one-way ticket to disaster, and unintentional overdose can happen when pills are laced with substances like fentanyl. As of 2017, Ohio was ranked second in the nation for opioid overdose deaths. You have the power to make healthy decisions and avoid drug use. When you find yourself in a tricky situation, try one of these: - I can't, I might be tested. - No, thank you. I need to see my (trusted adult) after this.? - No, thanks - I need to focus on (sport or activity).? We know peer pressure can be difficult, so try practicing what you will say if you're offered. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl and its dangers, while well-documented by health professionals and law enforcement, are largely unknown to the general population and even more so to its most vulnerable population: youth and young adults. ?? According to the CDC, fentanyl is involved in more deaths of Americans under 50 than any other cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, and all other accidents. Among teenagers, overdose deaths linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl tripled in the past two years, yet 73% have never heard of fake prescription pills being made with fentanyl. ?? #FlashbackFriday: On March 11, 2018, #AHRQ releases Community Level Statistics on Hospital Stays for Alcohol and Other Drugs, an online resource that shows a county-level comparison of hospitalization rates from substance abuse. Using HCUP data, the resource shows that alcohol, opioid, and stimulant abuse were the top three highest causes of substance abuse-related hospitalizations in most communities. The resource was created to help healthcare policymakers identify areas where the opioid crisis is most severe so that mitigation efforts could be intentionally targeted. https://bit.ly/2XvIOsF

March 31 is International Drug Checking Day. This is a day to come together and raise awareness about the harm reduction services offered in our communities, including drug checking. Whether you’re a partygoer, a health professional or you care about the well-being of others, this day is an important day for all of us, especially considering the significant increases in toxic drug poisonings happening in communities across the country. Preliminary data from 2023 shows that 445 people died here in Manitoba from drug-related deaths. By advocating for drug checking services, we’re taking a proactive step towards safer drug use so that people who use drugs can make informed decisions when using. Drug checking helps to prevent drug poisoning and saves lives. #MSPBuildingStability #Winnipeg #Manitoba #HarmReduction #TestYourDrugs
