In anticipation of the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, I was invited to offer thoughts on the challenges facing international trade.? South Korea’s Ambassador to T&T, Dongil Oh boasts that while South Korea is a global manufacturing powerhouse, T&T is also an economic hub in the Caribbean and both countries must use their respective strengths to develop greater economic co-operation. He also pointed out that South Korea, which is a highly developed market economy, is the leader in several fields including semiconductors, automobiles, heavy industry, shipbuilding and energy industries. “Through global competitiveness, Korean companies are actively seeking to enter foreign markets. Therefore, I am sure that today’s exchange will lead to exchanges between the two business markets. T&T is recognised as an economic hub of the Caribbean region with an annual Gross Domestic product (GDP) exceeding US$28 billion which holds great potential for development. Most recently, with the opening of the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate, this will exponentially escalate the volume of manufactured goods that can be exported throughout the Americas, European and Korean markets,” he said. Oh spoke last Monday at a webinar hosted by the T&T Coalition of Services Industries (TTSCI) on doing business with South Korea as part of its Doing Business with the World Series. He noted that next year South Korea and T&T will celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He reminded the business community that last year South Korea’s Prime Minister Han Duck-Su visited T&T to attend the 45th Caricom Summit. “This was the first time a South Korean prime minister visited the Caribbean region. On this historic event, he presented strategies to bolster South Korean and Caribbean collaboration and vowed to increase funding to the region by spending five times the current amount to US$3 million each year. To add to this milestone, we also had a largescale business delegation. Congratulations to James Grogan, recently named Chair of the Board of the National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones (NAFTZ). Below, James discusses what FTZs are, his involvement in NAFTZ, his hobbies and more. Who here has heard of handball? What exactly are FTZs? James: U.S. FTZs have been around for nearly a century and are designated areas that provide companies with a variety of tariff, tax and supply chain benefits. More importantly, FTZs are vital job creators across the nation, fostering tremendous economic growth in local communities. Administered by the Department of Commerce and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, FTZs incentivize thousands of companies to invest in the U.S., strengthening our economy. You’ve been involved with NAFTZ for nearly a decade. How has this impacted your career? James: NAFTZ has greatly enriched my career. The organization brings together a diverse group of professionals – including economic developers, corporate leaders, attorneys and service providers – offering invaluable insights and perspectives. Learning from mentors and leaders outside my immediate organization has been crucial for my professional growth. Additionally, our team’s participation in NAFTZ has allowed us to greatly expand our customs, trade and FTZ practice here at FTI Consulting, enhancing our service offerings. Congratulations on being named Chair of the Board for NAFTZ. Any goals or visions stepping into this role? James: Thank you! As we navigate an increasingly chaotic trade and geopolitical landscape, there are many initiatives to pursue. A key focus will be the creation of an Emerging Leaders Program, aimed at promoting junior professionals in our industry. They represent the future of the U.S. FTZ program, and we want to provide them with opportunities to network, share innovative ideas and develop into the leaders our industry needs for future success. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? James: As a parent of a lively five-year-old daughter, much of our time is devoted to her ever-changing interests, which is enjoyable. NRW is one of the most innovative locations in the aerospace industry and one of the most important locations for aerospace research in Europe.
