Last month, Mission Local won *six* state-wide accolades! We're late to celebrating ourselves, but: We took the No. 1 spot for both commentary and *general excellence* in our size category at the California Journalism Awards with the California News Publishers Association. The judges wrote: “Mission Local’s supervisor election coverage is unrivaled in this competition." In total, the judges gave us six awards, including nods for our coverage of the Dolores Park hill bomb, San Francisco’s $70 million in law enforcement settlements, and the shooting death of Banko Brown outside a mid-Market Walgreens. https://lnkd.in/ghGnebxH

Workplace harassment in the legal profession is a reality. I have experienced it too in the past, as have so many others I know. The power balances and importance of reputation in our profession mean that it often goes on with impunity, especially if the harassor is a boss or a law firm partner who can impact your career. There’s no point in us talking performatively about mental health in the profession without owning up to, and fixing, this.
So proud this is finally out in the world. No part of this story would have been possible without the dozens of women who spoke to us about their experiences in the legal profession (those who could go on the record and those who could not), a tireless team of Toronto Star editors who believed in our reporting and, of course, the inimitable Robert Cribb and the support of the Investigative Journalism Bureau. The Associated Press has revamped its Stylebook with a new chapter on criminal justice, aiming to transform how newsrooms cover public safety. This guide urges journalists to move away from sensational stories and towards data-rich narratives that educate and hold authorities accountable. Key takeaways include: ?? Be cautious of early police reports, which can be incomplete or inaccurate. ?? Avoid terms like “slay” and “slain” for murders, and prefer “child” or “teenager” over “juvenile” or “minor.” ?? Use person-first language, e.g., “John Doe, who has been convicted of a felony,” instead of “felon.” Journalists can learn how these changes emphasize the importance of fairness, accuracy, and accountability in reporting, helping to build trust with the community and foster a more informed public. #CriminalJustice #Journalism #Modifier ?? https://lnkd.in/eV7zZ95P

The results of the 2024 election underscore the vital connection between American democracy and independent journalism. Grassroots journalism's role is more crucial than ever, especially in health and environmental reporting. Communities nationwide are losing reliable news sources, resulting in lower voter participation and unchecked power. Planet Detroit remains a steadfast watchdog for health and the environment in Detroit and Michigan, delivering accurate, nuanced, and on-the-ground reporting. To sustain its vital work, Planet Detroit has launched an end-of-year fundraising campaign aiming to raise $60,000 by year-end. Supporting local journalism is essential for holding power accountable and ensuring critical issues receive the attention they deserve. Contributions will significantly impact not just the newsroom, but the community, the environment, and democracy as a whole. Support the mission to keep environmental journalism alive and impactful by contributing to Planet Detroit today. https://buff.ly/4hJcpoj

#PinkSlime #NewsSites, a Natural Consequence of #DailyJournalism's Self-Inflicted Decline magnified by #Technology Innovation, great P1 Story Sat 6 Apr by #PhiladelphiaInquirer's #AlfredLubrano. "Must Reading" for folks like me with an interest / passion for #Politics / #PublicAffairs. Builds literally on discussions this week with a colleague about #ContentAggregation, #Audience / #Community Building, and #TechnologyPlatforms, a new venture I may assist her with. As a #LifeLongJournalist (YES! More than a half century, first #Reporter #PayChecks in the 1960s!), #PublicAffairs Guy and more with a Passion for the #IssuesDuJour, this is concerning. #Lubrano's is a MUST-READ article! But as I told my new friend #GwenAdams, from #Georgia, it's an inevitable result of (1) Self-Inflicted Mismanagement of Journalism by #CashBox Ownership, (2) #Ethical / Quality Deterioration sponsored by #Agenda-driven #Biased Journalism that abandoned our historic #Ethics standards for #Objectivity, #Balance and #FairPlay, (3) Changing Tastes by #Citizen #Customer #Stakeholders. #Delaware's #NewsJournal Papers, that brought me here 49 years ago this week, covering #Delaware #Politics, had 125,000 subscribers / circulation among 200,000 households and 720,000 people in 1975 when I arrived. Today, with more than 1 million people in our 3 counties, perhaps some 300,000 households, the paper circulates perhaps 20,000 print copies, a decline in market share from 60% to less than 10%. By apparent design, or whatever, it has made itself #Irrelevant. Once, conversations of the day were driven by the #FrontPage of that #Newspaper -- today, that never happens because of its #Irrelevance. Albeit some blame Social / Technology, a big share lies at the feet of #Gatehouse, the #PrivateEquity-funded acquirer of newspapers nationwide that so blemished its name that it abandoned the #Gatehouse name for its last acquisition, #Gannett, adopting that instead. It was Gannett that acquired the #DelawareNewsJournal in winter-spring 1978, a few months after I left there as #StateCapitolBureauChief for the #DuPontCompany #PublicAffairs. Industry Insiders are uniformly saddened by the Fall of #AmericanJournalism.
