Icebreakers. What are your thoughts? Commonly used to warm up a group to help them get to know each other. They focus on sharing information such as names, personal facts or just allow you to become more acquainted by just having a little fun. We ran one yesterday where two trains competed to see how many passengers (balloons) they could get aboard their ?? It was close but there was a winner, and we all had a bit of fun in the process. Sixteen years ago today, after a bird strike caused US Air Flight 1549 to lose power in both engines, Captain Sullenberger and First Office Skiles immediately pulled out the QRH (Quick Reference Handbook). The QRH is a manual pilots use to troubleshoot non-normal situations. A series of steps determined the engines could not be restarted. A process of evaluation and elimination then determined returning to an airport was not possible, and landing in the Hudson was their best option. With that decision made, they began executing the process for a crash landing. All the while they were in communication with air traffic controllers, the cabin crew, and their passengers. When they came to rest, the passengers and crew began following the process of evacuating passengers. Within moments of the plane coming to rest, processes for rescuing, caring for, and taking an account of all those aboard were already underway. While all this was still unfolding, processes for investigating all aspects of the incident had already begun as well. ? Head of Supply Chain Philip Barnes first gained his understanding of how “People + Process = Performance” while serving in combat with the US Army’s 82nd?Airborne Division. Philip says that things like “One Point Lessons” centered around specific tasks that need to be performed while operating equipment, “Leaders Standard Work”, and Standard Operating Procedures, ensure that everyone knows exactly what to do, when, and how to do it right. ?
