Friday thought: Leave the sword in the stone and start a conversation as partners ???. Traditionally, students and teachers have had very specific roles to play within a school. These roles may have worked in the past, but it is time to change. We can facilitate and foster an environment that embraces student voice and starts our organisation on the connection journey by relinquishing the power dynamics of traditional school. The dynamics that enforce traditional roles and limit the space for genuine guidance, support and intrinsically motivated learning. People often ask, “how did you find success in your classroom?” and after much thought, I realize that it’s a superpower- one that every teacher can obtain. It’s the power of metacognition! I started to see drastic success in my classroom when I became aware of my own thinking process when planning instruction for my students. It is how all of my students experienced some type of academic growth and how my classes would amass an average pass rate of 92% on the state standardized assessment, even during a pandemic. And these weren't "honors" kids y'all! When we start thinking about our thinking, we deliver clear instruction to our clients: our students. This is how you can see tangible growth - you're focusing on one thing. You're giving them support outside of the classroom to help them with that one thing. When you show back up, you're checking to see how they're doing around that one thing. So the feedback doesn't feel punitive. It doesn't feel like I gotcha, it doesn't feel like I've got to perform as a teacher to appease your instrument. Instead, it's really about focusing on helping me grow in serving my students so that we can help our students achieve the vision that we have as a school.
