?? ?? ?? Why the heck the Buffalo?!? ?? ?? ?? Virtuous' theme for 2024 struck a strong cord within me and I am proud to be one of the buffalo within our large herd! Here's why we chose this theme from our head buffalo Gabe Cooper ??: 1?? Buffalo Walk into the Storm. ?? Did you know that when a big storm is coming, cows will turn and run away from it? In contrast, buffalo will face the storm and head into it. The buffalo have the right idea – by heading into the storm, though the wind and rain might sting a little harder, they get through to the sunshine much quicker. The poor cows spend a lot longer being miserable in the cold wind and rain. At Virtuous, we do hard things. We don't run from hard things. We don't try to avoid the storm. We take it head on. We know in order to do great things, requires difficult things. And, We Walk into the Storm. 2?? For their size, Buffalo are massively athletic. Buffalo can run?at speeds of 30-45 mph for 5 miles while a horse can?only run up to 40 mph for 1 mile! ?? 3?? Buffalo work in Community. If you see buffalo together, they protect the herd - more than any other animal. ???? One team unified. We have each others' back and the backs of our customers. We are a community and team for each other. ???? ?? ?? ?? We are Smart. We are Bold. And, above all, We Are Buffalo. ?? ?? ?? #Virtuous #Buffalo #ResponsiveFundraising #MuchMoreThanACRM #Nonprofit #Tech

A colleague and I discuss how people today seem more tired and edgy. He commented that many of us are dealing with stress from all sides: job, political, financial, work, family, etc. Some days, I become quite overwhelmed -- with my negative thoughts pinging around out of control. When I feel this way, I tell myself I can't change what's going on, but I can change how I react, as well as the choices I make. (I also head out for a bike ride, which always clears my head.) One of my choices, which I post about frequently, is buying US made items whenever possible. The second choice is supporting causes I care about, one of which is the Essex Greenbelt's Osprey program. Each year I donate $100 toward it -- which may not seem like a lot, but it is. (I've been in fundraising and know any amount is always gratefully received.) Greenbelt, a non-profit land trust, conserves land in MA. I'm thrilled to learn a local woman in Haverhill (town next to mine) has donated two parcels of land totaling 90+ acres. I ride my bike past both a couple times a week and noticed the new Greenbelt sign last week. Hurrah! The parcels are adjacent to two small working farms, so it's wonderful this entire area will remain intact. For those of you who love birds, the Osprey cam in Gloucester, MA is now live: https://lnkd.in/ezwQwxu. Annie and Squam have their first egg, which is very exciting. And, here is the link about the parcels now under Greenbelt management. It may not be local to you, but it's a great example of how we can change our part of the world: https://lnkd.in/eYFc-GgY And, a link to my updated Keep It Made blog Welcome page -- about why I do what I do. This was a little scary for me to write. I'm not used to being, what is for me, so honest in saying what I think. https://lnkd.in/eJeiTYuj #blessings #smallchoices #spring

We've been celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the opening of the I&M Canal over the last year, and here's one reason why: When the I&M Canal opened in 1848, it had an immediate and lasting impact on the entire Midwestern economy–not just Chicago and Illinois. Before the canal, northern Illinois had no paved roads or railroads, which meant farmers and other merchants found it difficult to ship goods to market. Without reliable transportation, many farmers only grew enough to supply themselves or their local community with food. During rainy seasons, the region's few trails turned into rivers of mud, and in the summer, clouds of dust choked horses and people alike. With the canal open, a journey that took fur traders three weeks in 1818 and took farmers days on muddy roads in the 1830s, took only 24 hours on a canal boat. Now people could get their goods to market, and while Chicago exploded as a hub for trade (the small town grew to a metropolis), people from all over the Midwest benefited from the money they could make there. Discover more ways the canal impacted the Midwest by reading (or listening to!) the story on our Substack: https://lnkd.in/g3ajDdHR And, stay tuned for more events as we finish off the celebrations of this anniversary year. **** Unfamiliar with Substack? Here are some tips: 1) Click the link above. The landing page may ask you if you would like to subscribe. Please do! Then, you'll receive an email every time we add a new Canal Story. 2) Subscribing is FREE. Just make sure to look for and click the free option. Or, you can choose one of the paid donation options, which will help fund our programming throughout the year. 3) More questions? Reach out.
