Really appreciating this list today in Anthony Richardson's piece 'The Path Forward: How Funders Can Respond to the Supreme Court’s Affirmative Action Rulings' "Following a discussion about the possible consequences of the decisions, I created a short list of actionable items for funders to consider: 1. Underwrite the cost of legal education, legal opinions, legal representation, and/or public policy advocacy for grantee partners who may need support amid push back from other funders, government, private citizens, anti-DEI antagonists, etc. 2. Support college access programs and/or on-campus programs that offer free tuition or scholarships for students based upon first-generation status, an interest in service learning, residency/zip code, or socio-economic inequities such as the?Posse Program,?Say Yes! Cleveland,?The Bonner Program,?Young Scholars Program, and others. 3. Support colleges and universities that provide summer learning and campus immersion programs for first-generation college students and/or students experiencing economic hardship. 4. Support democracy building efforts, including — but not limited to — power-building, community engagement, civic leadership development, voter education, voter registration, and voter mobilization in BIPOC and historically marginalized communities. 5. Fund media and journalism solutions that promote fair, accurate and truthful information such as?National Public Radio,?The Marshall Project, and their local affiliates." https://lnkd.in/gjA_QMJp

The 2024 election has made one thing clear to me: we need to rethink how we're civically engaging Americans. While we've mastered campus organizing and viral hashtags, we're still missing crucial voices from rural and working-class communities. Today's outreach largely targets liberal college-educated, urban young voters while overlooking those who entered the workforce directly, live in rural areas, or come from different political backgrounds. We're still not having the deliberative, inclusive conversations we need. Instead of reaching communities across the political spectrum, we've focused on energizing traditional strongholds and online spaces without fostering dialogue with a range of perspectives. To create the change we want to see next time, we have to move beyond our comfort zones and start having authentic, deliberative conversations across ALL communities - not just the ones that fit our usual demographic checkboxes. It's time to meet Americans where they are—whether that's on a construction site, in a small-town diner, or at a trade school. Real inclusion means engaging everyone, not just those who already share our views or have similar backgrounds. We need to frame issues in ways that resonate with diverse lived experiences and create spaces for meaningful political discourse, not just political theater. 2025 will by far be the hardest year for women, teachers, public servants, the working class, and our planet. We will only get through this if we finally start recognizing we have more in common than we think. Its important now more than ever too start having conversation on what we can do too have a America thats for everyone, and not just a select few.

Before turning 18, many young people can make an impact in the political world. ???? Samad Quraishi, The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) scholarship recipient and founder of the Centre for Voters Initiative and Action, is proving this every day.? Through his leadership, Samad has worked to make voter registration easier for high school students, helping them prepare to vote and engage in civic life. ??? His efforts highlight the importance of youth involvement in shaping tomorrow’s policies today. Many states offer pre-registration programs so students can be ready to vote as soon as they turn 18. Samad’s story demonstrates that political participation isn’t just about voting—it’s about leadership, advocacy, and contributing to meaningful change in your community. ?? Thinking about the 14th amendment today…. As we navigate the current political landscape, it's crucial to consider the profound impact on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The federal government's stance can create horrific setbacks in achieving a truly equitable workforce and educational system. When DEI efforts are undermined, we risk: - Losing diverse talent: Without active DEI policies, underrepresented groups may feel excluded, leading to a less diverse workforce. - Widening inequities: A lack of focus on equitable practices can exacerbate existing disparities in education and career opportunities. - Stifling innovation: Diverse perspectives drive innovation. Limiting DEI initiatives stifles the creativity that comes from varied experiences and viewpoints. Now, more than ever, it's vital to champion DEI in our workplaces and institutions. Let's advocate for policies that ensure everyone has a fair chance to succeed. When will our nation #SeeThingsDifferently? #DEI #Equity #Inclusion #Diversity #WorkplaceInclusion #EducationEquality

Kids First Chicago weighed in on the Illinois Senate's recent move towards an elected Chicago School Board. Key points from yesterday’s decision include: - The Senate's approval for only 10 of the 21 board members to be elected this November, raising concerns about inclusivity and democracy in governance. - Our concerns center on the proposed election map's failure to fairly represent Black and Latine communities and the revised petition signature requirements that may favor candidates with substantial political, financial, or interest group backing. - We advocate for noncitizen voting rights, campaign finance reform, and compensation for board members to ensure a governance model that reflects and uplifts the diversity and needs of Chicago's communities. Our mission is clear: to ensure an educational governance system that is democratic, inclusive, and equitable for all Chicago families. Your Vote, Your Voice! ????? This election is huge for me—but not for the reasons you might expect ... I had the privilege of participating as a voter for the first time in the 2012 Presidential Election. As a Black woman and African American studies scholar, it was an unforgettable experience. I thought about my ancestors, who were denied their constitutional rights, who faced violence and oppression simply for wanting their voices heard in the country that was built on their backs. But today, this election feels different. Today, I’m a mother to two curious young children, ages 6 and 7. Their questions break my heart: Why does this person running for office not want women to have control of their bodies? Why does this person treat and speak about people who don’t look like them so badly? To make things worse the political advertisements are NON-STOP. Even though my husband and I make a conscious effort to monitor what our children are exposed to, it felt almost impossible to shield them from the barrage of “information” that was anything but neutral. Much of what they’ve encountered has been highly opinionated, subjective, and, frankly, misinformed. My attempt to shield my family from the constant political noise came to a screeching halt when my 7-year-old asked me to explain what "Project 2025" was, a term he had heard used around school. How do you explain that to a child, when fundamentally, it doesn't make sense to you as an adult? I had to prepare and get thoroughly informed to make it through the past few months of interrogation by my future world leaders. All jokes aside though, it’s tough to explain to them why someone seeking the highest office in the land seems to want to divide us, rather than unite us. We instill in children to be kind, to respect differences, and to be empathetic to the needs of others. But why does it feel like there’s a different standard when it comes to those in authority? Say what you will about the candidates—neither of them are perfect (who is?). But we HAVE to ask ourselves: where is the empathy? Where is the understanding? In THIS moment, we need leadership that reflects our collective humanity, not just the interests of the few. This election isn’t just about political policy or party lines—it’s about shaping the kind of world we want our children to grow up in. It's about giving them a future where they can see compassion, integrity, and respect at the highest levels of power. Did you vote today and get your voice heard? Sidenote - Kind of poetic how the painting beneath our feet at their school (our polling place) says "The place where YOU belong" ???? #ElectionDay #Vote #Leadership #Empathy #Humanity #VoteForChange #RepresentationMatters #DemocracyInAction #ChildrensQuestions #PowerInNumbers #ChangeisPossible #Allyship

“We will terminate every diversity, equity, and inclusion program across the entire federal government,” said Donald Trump, the former president declared to a packed auditorium. It was more than just a popular applause line at Trump rallies. Behind the scenes, a coalition of dozens of right-wing groups is preparing to make Trump’s words a reality. States such as Florida, Texas and Utah are among the handful whose legislatures have approved bans on DEI efforts in higher education and public offices. In Florida, the Board of Education recently announced a new rule banning public colleges from using state and federal funds on DEI initiatives. Other states have introduced or passed bills with similar restrictions or require agencies to publicly disclose their DEI initiatives. Has the pro-democracy movement failed? In the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election, Scott Warren, a fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and the cofounder of Generation Citizen, offers four recommendations for leaders dedicated to reconstituting and strengthening democracy in the United States: ??Listen before acting: We should attempt to really understand how people from all political ideologies are currently thinking about democracy rather than quickly designing solutions. ? Call balls and strikes: It is incumbent on the pro-democracy community to call out whenever behavior and rhetoric violates democratic norms, irrespective of which political party is involved. ?? Diversify the ranks: It may be uncomfortable, but the pro-democracy community needs to diversify its ranks to include conservatives and individuals who cast their vote for Trump. ???? Get local: One way for advocates to address challenges to democracy is to organize and get involved in local politics themselves.
