At the Gates Foundation, we’re committed to advancing student success year-round, with a focus on supporting students who encounter the most significant barriers to postsecondary education. As we move beyond National Hispanic Heritage Month, I devoted my latest newsletter to celebrating Latino students’ achievements and aspirations – because that’s what we should be doing 365 days a year. Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll find inside: ?? Latino Enrollment is on the Rise According to the National Student Clearinghouse, Latino persistence and degree completion is climbing across the country! ?? Highlighting Institutions that Lead the Way With 600 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) nationwide, our partners at Excelencia in Education are spotlighting those with exceptional learning environments for Latino students. ?? Compelling Diverse: Issues In Higher Education piece by Wil Del Pilar of EdTrust on reconceptualizing the I in DEI as Integration: "Redefining inclusion as integration in higher education challenges the norms and structures that have traditionally prioritized voices and perspectives that reinforce the status quo rather than amplify diverse voices. The potential rewards would result in a higher education system that reflects the depth of experiences of its students and prepares them to thrive in society, upholding principles of fairness and justice not just in theory but in practice." https://lnkd.in/epfWbVFn

As #HispanicHeritageMonth comes to a close, a time when we celebrate the many contributions of Hispanic-Americans, we must also acknowledge the challenges many Hispanic and Latinx students continue to face in their pursuit of education. Despite significant progress, barriers remain that can limit opportunities and success. Hispanic students are more likely to deal with discrimination than their white counterparts. They are also less likely to complete a post-secondary degree. How can we overcome these barriers? At District C, we believe that Career and Technical Education (CTE) and work-based learning programs can play a pivotal role in overcoming these challenges and improving equity for Hispanic students. ?? How CTE and Work-Based Learning Can Help: ??CTE programs offer students hands-on experience and practical skills that prepare them for real-world careers. ??Work-based learning provides opportunities for students to explore high-demand industries ??These programs create pathways to success for diverse students by offering industry-recognized credentials and experience As we honor the contributions of Hispanic Americans, we must continue to tackle educational inequality and create opportunities for ALL students. CTE and work-based learning are essential tools for building a more inclusive and accessible future. #EquityInEducation #CTE #WorkBasedLearning #DiversityInSTEM

This article clearly states that the goal of diversity and inclusion efforts is “creating safe and welcoming environments for all students, regardless of their background.” These backgrounds include economic background, veteran status, foster care and adoptive background, and more. But that’s all it is: a desire for ALL students to feel safe and welcome. If you see a politician decrying DEI, ask them—sincerely—what the problem with diversity is. Don’t be deceived by talk of propaganda or indoctrination. Make them get to the point: What is wrong with ensuring access and success for all?
In 2022, I had the extraordinary honor of contributing to (and editing) a book with some very talented colleagues. Today, we posted an article to reflect on our continued commitment to and celebration of diversity in higher education.

2024 marks 10 years of Kinetic Seeds. What began as a rallying cry to amplify student voice in service of higher education reform, is now fully woven into our DNA. If I had to sum up what we’ve learned, it’s this: Today's students are the primary bearers of systemic inequities which is why their active participation and inclusion in transformation efforts are critical to creating fair and just learning environments. Simply put: You can not transform what you do not include. What I'm exceptionally proud of is our ability to deeply engage students in meaningful work, ensuring they gain the most from their experiences with us. We have evolved our approach to include students in diverse and significant roles, from providing insights to leading change, and from evaluating processes to becoming true partners and change-agents. Our collaborative process harnesses their unique experiences to tackle the challenges of pursuing a college education. In recognition of their critical contributions, we offer fair financial compensation and ensure they receive the academic and professional recognition they deserve. As we look forward to the next decade, our commitment to elevating and amplifying student voice remains unyielding. Don't let students be sidelined from shaping their future. Empower them to inform and guide institutional transformation. I guarantee you’ll be astonished by the innovation, insight, and drive they bring to the table. Thank you to every student, partner, funder, and supporter who has been part of our journey so far. Your commitment to change have been the driving force behind our success. Here's to another decade of pushing boundaries together. #KineticSeeds #StudentVoice #HigherEducationTransformation #DecadeOfImpact
Join us as we lean our whole-selves into an urgent truth: traditional approaches to student success have long excluded, overlooked—silenced—the voices they are meant to support, especially those from underrepresented and marginalized communities. If you agree, we invite you to check out our approach to supporting student success. It's predicated on the idea that we need to do more than just recognize diversity—we must tackle the root issues of inclusion and the power imbalances that impact who makes it to graduation day and who does not. And that means empowering and engaging today’s students to have a direct impact on shaping the educational programs, policies, and practices that govern their academic journey. If you're an institution grappling with equity gaps and can commit to amplifying the voices of those most affected by structural flaws and inequities, we've got the expertise, the framework, and the passion to guide you.

NMU participated as one of 40 host institutions for the nationwide Amplifying Student Voices (ASV) Convening on Oct. 5. The hybrid event brought together more than 400 student leaders to engage in both virtual and in-person dialogues on the future of belonging, diversity and equity in higher education, and on strategies for fulfilling the promise of an inclusive democracy. “It was important that NMU participate in this national convening because it provided a platform to listen to and engage with student voices directly,” said Shawnrece Butler, NMU assistant vice president for Diversity and Inclusion. “These dialogues empowered students to shape the narrative around inclusive campus environments, offering institutions valuable insights into what students need to feel connected and supported and offering essential information from which to create student-centered policies and practices that genuinely reflect their needs and aspirations.” Read more about this event, here: https://lnkd.in/gGGJktV8 #DEI #Diversity #DiversityAndInclusion #HigherEducation #HigherEd #Change #ChangeLeaders

Grateful to present at CPED alongside over 400 university disruptive leaders from over 100 different universities willing to accept the status quo.? As I reflect on nuggets of wisdom to bring back to Metropolitan State University of Denver?this resonated with me: Building inclusive programs that reflect the essence of DEI for students of color and first-generation students at predominantly white institutions involves several key strategies:1. Engagement and Input: Involve students in the planning process to understand their needs and experiences. Conduct surveys and focus groups to gather insights.2. Culturally Relevant Curriculum: Develop curricula that reflect diverse perspectives and histories. This helps all students feel represented and valued.3. Mentorship Programs: Establish mentorship initiatives pairing students of color and first-generation students with faculty, staff, and peers who can provide guidance and support.4. Support Services: Create dedicated resources such as academic advising, counseling, and workshops focused on the unique challenges faced by these students.5. Community Building; Foster a sense of belonging through student organizations, cultural events, and networking opportunities that celebrate diversity.6. Training for Faculty and Staff: Provide professional development on cultural competency and inclusive teaching practices to ensure an understanding of the challenges faced by these groups.7. Financial Support: Increase access to scholarships, grants, and financial literacy programs specifically targeting these student populations.8. Retention Strategies: Implement programs aimed at supporting students through their academic journeys, such as study groups and peer support networks.By prioritizing these strategies, institutions can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that empowers all students to succeed. Thanks Carmen McCrink
