What has changed your travel habits in the past five years? The pandemic changes priorities, habits and working patterns, so as expected my research found the this changes travel habits for a quarter of respondents from across Europe. But an even biggest impact was 'change in life stage', which influenced travel habits for almost a third of participants. This finding echoes previous research, which finds that personal events such as moving house, moving job, joining or leaving the workforce, having children or becoming an empty-nester have a big impact. In fact, having children is a cause of non-car users feeling the need to get a car... and once they have one giving it up can be hard. So, what can we do with this insight? A few ideas: - Can public bodies that know about house moves (#localgov) capitalise one the 'fresh start effect' to introduce new residents to the green travel opportunities near their new homes before habits are ingrained? - New parents are a huge focus for corporate marketing... who knew all the products that a new babe or parent 'needs'... what can be done to help parents see options other than moving to primarily car transport? Cargo bike schemes in cities? Family friendly car share schemes? - Could employers do more to support new staff as they establish new travel habits - both for commuting and travelling to workplaces and clients? Changing our travel habits can be driven by many things - starting a new job, moving house, new public transport services and many other factors. In our latest set of insights we look at some of the main reasons for changes in the last five years from nearly 50,000 people across 12 European cities.
