I had a conversation recently with a colleague about having appropriate skills for the required task.
I think we have all been there: stuck in the field, or the office, working on a problem that we don’t completely understand because we have never been exposed to it, or the knowledge associated to resolve it.
A true case of “I don’t know what I don’t know”.
It’s a stressful, embarrassing, and confidence-shaking situation.
Yes; we do go through life learning from such experiences as a large part of knowledge expansion, but it is neither necessary nor appropriate to do that at a customers expense or at the expense of the individual suffering in a preventable situation.
In reality it’s fairly easy to educate, classify, and support people based on a known learning path and experience base.
Under that circumstance, expanding, and gaining knowledge with the aid of designated, senior, more experienced resources becomes a positive expansion, instead of a trial by fire.
I am grateful for industry institutions, such as AVIXA, AQAV, SYN-AUD-CON, and the host of manufacturer education resources that exist and the Mentors who have shared their wisdom with me.
It’s our duty as leaders, mentors, and peers to ensure that we equip our colleagues and partners with the tools and overlay support to help them succeed and advance.
For everyone’s sake.
