The First Step Act was a success. Congress should now prioritize its next steps towards a criminal justice system that reduces crime and improves public safety through sensible, humane approaches to punishment and rehabilitation. https://lnkd.in/gNp7D7pK

Short term prison sentences do not address the root causes of offending. In fact, they often deliver significant disruption to individual lives, which in turn can often increase the likelihood of future offences being committed. Solutions do exist and here is a moment in time where we can take some simple steps to implement them - excellent comment piece below from Darren Nicholas ??

This letter perfectly captures why it's important to draw the distinction between holding people to account for their actions and categorizing people outright. Applying binary thinking like good v. evil, or "tough on crime" prosecutor v. bad criminal, reinforces punitive tendencies which chip away at people's sense of their humanity and keeps our society extremely unwell. Person is bad = cancel them. Person has a criminal record = they forever deserve disrespect and pain. In a country where 1 in 3 adults have a criminal record, and approx 2 million people are or have been incarcerated, THAT IS A LOT OF PEOPLE in pain. Is that what we want? Large swaths of our community suffering? Or do we want real change, where people can redeem themselves and make right when they’ve done something wrong, and where ALL PEOPLE are capable of experiencing the dignity, opportunity, and possibility this country offers? I commit to the latter. Please read and share the letter!
VP Harris was the first candidate in 2019 to agree to attend a presidential town hall on criminal justice reform hosted by directly impacted people and her remarks were powerful. Criminal justice services did not receive any additional funding in today's #autumnstatement. This means that, due to inflation, they will experience real-term funding cuts over the next year. ? With demand and pressure on our prisons set to significantly increase, these cuts mean there is little hope for securely managing what is going to be a huge expansion of its population, much less for being able to deliver effective rehabilitation in such conditions. We know that recalls, remands and short sentences severely impact the chance of an individual being able to resettle into the community – and instead drive them into a cycle of recidivism. That’s why, in Catch22’s Manifesto, we are calling on the Government to place rehabilitation at the heart of the Criminal Justice System (https://lnkd.in/dPn5WAWW). Catch22 suggests that one way of doing this is by prioritising rehabilitative alternatives to recall – though the wider sector has not fallen short on demonstrating other innovative ways, too. I've written about what dwindling funds and rising demand on the custodial estate means for those trapped in our Criminal Justice System in the blog below. We will continue to advocate for this policy change, amongst others in our Catch22 Manifesto. If you're interested in hearing more about our advocacy work at Catch22 and how you can get involved, please reach out.
The past month has seen a host of new measures proposed by the Government to reform and repair the UK’s Criminal Justice System (CJS). At the forefront of these measures is the intent to tackle the biggest problem facing the CJS: its rising prison population. In this week’s blog, Catch22’s Policy and Communication Manager Miranda Shanks digests the recent announcements made by Justice Minister, Alex Chalk, and those included in the King’s Speech, and the impacts they will have on a criminal justice system that is facing a capacity crisis: https://ow.ly/49oq50QaeKG
