Investors and inventor friends: I have a sincere question about the usefulness of accurate futurist thinking. About two years ago I accurately predicted both of these developments, and I saw videos about them both today: - digital price displays that use AI to update prices in real time in response to consumer demand (See info here: https://lnkd.in/gDNb6u_9) - the AI race coming down to whoever creates the best interface- it’s Microsoft’s Windows vs Apple’s MacOS all over again. Glasses are the obvious choice for augmenting reality and creating a world where the “interface” merges with your daily life seamlessly. As Steve Jobs said, “the best design is invisible”. (See linked article) When I was a kid I predicted that the internet would become bigger than cable television, that we would see ads for websites on our tvs, and that we’d stream movies on our computers and handheld devices. I foresaw blockbuster shuttering and Netflix being invented, people ordering clothes off the internet, conducting business and making video calls. This was so early on that the adults in my life told me I was crazy. I was about 10 years old. This happens regularly- I predict the future of technology (among other things) with a high degree of accuracy. Yes, I do have a futuristic tech startup, and yes, it’s based on B2B market predictions. (And yes, I’m raising.) But I’ve been struggling to fundraise in this climate and have learned that no matter how well I have my finger on the pulse of the future, if I don’t have massive resources behind me, I still have to just watch the bigger players beat me to market. For instance, my team developed an AI tool for project management and voice-based interactions this Spring that was ahead of OpenAI’s own technology. In many ways, it still is ahead, but they released an update this week that helps them catch up to us. We currently have a billion-dollar moat, but I haven’t even been able to close a million dollar round (yet) to bring it to market. So my question is- how can I put this talent to use? Do I play the stock market? Write sci fi? Is there some other way to put my “futurism” to work for a company? I’m tired of just predicting things and watching other people do them, but I can’t go start a new startup every time I have a good idea. Where do I put the rest of them? ??
