In a recent article in The Guardian, Kenneth Amaeshi, a Professor of Sustainable Finance at the European University Institute sheds light on the transformative potential of Africapitalism, a concept coined by our Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, C.F.R and its core relevance to Prof. Oke Oramah, Chairman of AFRIXIM Bank. He reflects “A light bulb moment for me was when Tony Elumelu coined Africapitalism and saw it as a possible way to articulate the private sector's positive role in Africa's development. Putting Africa first is at the heart of Africapitalism.” According to him, Africapitalism is an imaginative articulation of a possible face of capitalism in Africa, which could be extended to other parts of the world. It is a discourse to galvanise a movement which will ultimately change the practice of capitalism in Africa. Positioned as such, Africapitalism becomes an aspiration for Africa's renaissance - i.e. a force for change. It challenges the status quo - i.e. capitalism in Africa - which has not transformed Africa. Since the 2015 Addis Ababa Action Agenda, there has been a greater push to mobilize private capital and move from ‘billions to trillions’ in investment to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This requires intense collaboration, both among DFIs like FMO, and between DFIs and donor agencies. This is where market creation, a pivotal aim in our 2030 Strategy, comes in: it aims to generate more investment opportunities for development banks and other large-impact investors seeking to contribute to private sector development in the markets and sectors that it currently cannot reach. To that end, we are excited to announce the launch of a new report by Africa Resilience Investment Accelerator (ARIA), a joint initiative we started with British International Investment, to address systemic barriers in African #frontiermarkets. The report, which is part of the Foundations of Growth series, dives deeper into how collaboration can unlock barriers to investment and create new opportunities, and makes the case for collaboration in frontier markets. It was an honour to attend the inspiring High-Level Panel, "Africa's Private Sector: Driving Economic Growth for the Continent and the World," at #UnstoppableAfrica, hosted by the Global Africa Business Initiative (GABI). ?? ?? The panel delved into the urgent mission of how robust, adaptable, and globally engaged African businesses can effectively tackle some of the continent's—and the world's—most pressing challenges. ?? ?? Here are the key takeaways: ?? Focus on Outcomes: - As an example of this approach, Prof. Benedict Okey Oramah shared that the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank)'s mandate is to tackle concrete challenges like low intra-African trade and commodity dependence.??? - Immediate priorities should include advancing clean energy manufacturing, digitalisation, and investment in infrastructure.?? ?? Collaboration is Key - The AfCFTA is a unique opportunity to build strong value chains across the continent, fostering public-private collaboration while creating new business opportunities ?? - The panel stressed the need to dismantle the fragmentation and divisions that have led to isolated states. ?? - The private sector must work alongside the public sector to drive intra-African trade, while governments must create enabling environments for it.??? - The African Union's handling of vaccine procurement for the COVID-19 pandemic is a great model for successful public-private partnerships.
