??New “Food as Health” Bill Introduced ?? Today, I’m filled with pride and gratitude as a endorser of the newly introduced “Food as Health” bill, championed by the incredible Congresswoman Robin Kelly. This legislation is a bold step forward in integrating Food is Medicine programs into our healthcare system, improving health outcomes, and addressing the root causes of diet-related diseases. ??? At Dion's Chicago Dream, we’ve seen firsthand how access to fresh, nutritious food transforms lives. This bill supports programs that prioritize local foods, sustainability, and community-focused solutions—values that align with our mission of delivering health equity through innovation and accountability. ???? But let’s be clear: this is just the beginning. The journey to fully codify Food is Medicine is an ongoing process. It requires collaboration across policymakers, healthcare providers, and grassroots organizations like ours to ensure these initiatives evolve and meet the needs of diverse communities. We must stay committed, stay accountable, and keep leading. A huge thank you to Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Billy Dwyer, MSW & the team for their leadership and unwavering commitment to health equity. Your vision inspires us all, and I’m eager to continue contributing to this movement through thought leadership and action. Together, we can build a future where food is not just a basic need—but a powerful tool for health, justice, and change. ??? Let’s keep pushing the boundaries. Let’s make health equity a reality. #FoodAsHealth #FoodIsMedicine #HealthEquity #Leadership #DionsChicagoDream #Accountability #CommunityImpact #ChiefDreamer #Food

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that every human being deserves affordable access to fresh, nutritious food. When viewed holistically, food not only supports physical health but also strengthens community bonds and enhances mental well-being.? ? This week, at Milken Institute’s Future of Health Summit, I had the immense pleasure of?joining a panel of leaders from across the health, food retail, and health-care industries?for a conversation titled, “Food as Engagement: Implications for Health and Access to Care.”? ? Although none of us can end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases on our own, we must not resign ourselves to thinking there’s nothing we can do. By continuing to cultivate and leverage cross-sector relationships, we have the power to achieve our collective vision of a healthier, more equitable America.? ? I’d like to thank?Feeding Change Senior Director Holly Freishtat for moderating our conversation, and my fellow panelists – Steve Brazeel from SunTerra, James Kirby, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA from Kroger Health, and Pamela Schwartz from Kaiser Permanente – for sharing their insights. ?? ? So I've mentioned before that disruption is needed to ensure equity is attainable within the food system. This is why we have been working hard to put together the "Our Food is Medicine" series to shed light on the realities that are apparent within Produce Prescription programs (PRx) and Food as Medicine efforts. These have created exciting buzz in both the food systems and health sectors, gaining presidential attention and significantly more private and public funding. There are growing efforts to embed these models into state and federal health policies, holding great promise to improve nutrition and health in low-income communities around the country. However, the dominant narrative surrounding FAM has been making the business case, while ignoring the structural discrimination that is a fundamental driver of health inequity, including patterns of disinvestment and structural racism that have significant and lasting impacts on the health and wellbeing of Habitualy excluded communities. Community-driven solutions often go unvoiced and unheard when in fact that those within the community will be most affected by this national movement. Despite the evidence that SDOH (Social Determinants of Health) goes beyond accessing healthy food, there is an emphasis on treating individuals as patients that must prove that they are ‘sick enough’ to access food through the healthcare/insurance complex. This dangerous miopic effort further perpetuates the problem of putting the onus on individual behavior as the main driver for health outcomes. This webinar will dive deep into the structures, including policy, research, and funding streams, fueling the FAM movement and create a pathway for community-voice to be included in the food as medicine narrative. Join us for a virtual conversation "Who Holds Power in the Business Case for Food as Medicine?” on Monday, April 29 at 2-3:30 EST. Panelists will examine how the current Food is Medicine landscape is being shaped by those in power and its potential community, agriculture, healthcare, economic, and policy implications. Envision with us a different FAM reality shaped by a community and grassroots lens where all our communities can be healthier, wealthier, and thrive. Harlan Krumholz & I love having guests. But we also love covering the most current news stories and there are important ones to discuss. This week we talked about: 1. Why are primary care practices (specifically Walmart's and Walgreen's recent ones) failing? 2. And after such excitement and amazing growth, how has telehealth failed so miserably, at least as judged by capital markets. 3. H5N1 may not be an immediate threat to humans. But it is also not as far off as we once thought. Cows in America appear widely infected and we need a lot more information to know how it is spread and who else might be getting it. 4. RAW MILK: Short story. NO! NO! NO! Maybe in the near future we will have evidence of health benefits. But right now there is ample evidence of risk. And unknown risk of HIGH levels of H5N1 in infected cow's RAW milk (and seemingly non-viable fragments in pasteurized milk). 5. Twitter/X experience with Community Notes is evaluated by researchers at UCSD and the short summary is that it is actually working to improve information flow. We discuss! All this and more, this week, and every week, on Health And Veritas. Yale School of Management Yale School of Public Health Yale School of Medicine https://lnkd.in/gEBFH9XK
