Dry Molded Fiber – The Packaging Material of the Future?? This is the question that arises after reading the packaging news feeds recently. We have already written more than once about the new developments of PulPac and its partners. And each time new options for packaging made of dry molded fiber appear. Just recently we wrote about a pilot batch of Baileys, released in bottles made of such fiber, i.e., essentially, in paper bottles. Now a pilot batch of Johnnie Walker Black Label whiskey is being released in similar bottles. For now, it will be distributed between several branded bars. But as we know, behind every successful pilot there is scaling. This is exactly what PulPac specialists have already started working on together with PA Consulting and Optima. The cooperation concerns the development of special equipment that would allow the use of dry molded fiber to be brought to the industrial scale level. And we are talking not only about bottles made from it, but also about coffee capsules and blister packaging, developments for which are only profitable with further production in large volumes. PulPac isn’t the only company interested in dry molded fiber, either. Bayer and PAPACKS are also developing biodegradable fiber-based packaging for some of their brands, using molded pulp technology and a plant-based coating. And Huhtamaki previously teamed up with Nestlé to produce paper-based, at-home biodegradable coffee capsules. A superior experience for cheese lovers ?? – SüDPACK has launched a new type of modified atmosphere packaging with a practical reclose system for the popular cheese Bergader Bergbauern. Thanks to the material-efficient, PP-based barrier films from the Pure-Line range, this packaging solution signals a move to increased sustainability and a more eco-friendly future. The new packaging concept is more than just product packaging. It is a major step forward in the battle against food waste, promoting more responsible resource management and an improved eco-balance. ? Sustainability is embedded in Bergader’s DNA, and it was their sustainability team that initiated this project. With our 40 years of experience in PP-based bottom webs, combined with our expertise in application technology and the processing of thermoforming packaging, we were ideally positioned to meet these demanding requirements. ? ?? By switching from the previous PET/PE or APET/PE packaging to a lighter, more material-efficient PP-based packaging concept, significant CO2 savings can be achieved due to the smaller carbon footprint of the polypropylene polymer. Furthermore, the volume of plastic saved amounts to hundreds of tonnes per year. The recyclability of the overall packaging has been certified at 85% by the independent institute cyclos-HTP. ? ?? Another key requirement in this context is maximum product protection and a long shelf life. Both are guaranteed due to various factors, such as the excellent sealing performance of the top and bottom webs, which are perfectly matched and equipped with the necessary high barriers, including against oxygen. At Anuga FoodTec, #SüDPACK and ULMA Packaging will be presenting two sustainable packaging concepts that are based entirely on monomaterials and therefore fulfill the requirements concerning recyclability. ?The Flow Pack PurePP as a sustainable alternative to conventional flow pack films will be processed by ULMA on the FM 400 high-speed machine. Despite the thinness of the material, a high level of product protection & packaging quality is guaranteed. ?The thermoforming Ecoterm rigid film in combination with a PP-based top web is particularly well-suited for packaging sliced sausage and cheese. This will be showcased by the top-of-the-line thermoforming model, the hygiene-certified TFS 700. The packaging concept is a sustainable alternative to conventional composites and can be classified as fully recyclable.
