By way of update, on February 15, 2024, the #newyorkstate #redistricting panel released its new map. If adopted, the #Congressional districts it proposes would make one seat more favorable for #Democratic candidates and shore up two other districts for the respective current incumbants, a Democratic and a #Republican. The New York State #legislature must now approve the map. The legislature, which is controlled by the Democratic party, will have the opportunity to make modifications to the panel's proposed map. The big question is whether the legislature will take an aggressive approach and try to create more seats that favor #Democrats? Or, in the wake of litigation that struck down the map it drew before the 2022 #elections, resulting in this "redo", will the legislature take a conservative approach and either adopt the panel's map or make minor modifications? The stakes are high for the #2024elections as the #houseofrepresentatives is currently controlled by the Republican party 219-213. Stay tuned as the process will continue to be interesting and consequential. #Congress #politics https://lnkd.in/eXzBJ-hu

It is great to see that the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is thinking long-term. At MoveIndigo, we are too. Our 2030 goal is to have enough Democratic presence in state legislatures and governors' mansions to counteract Republican gerrymandering after the 2030 census/redistricting and to prevent other voter suppression tactics. When Democrats who are relocating realize that they don't have to compromise on their important moving priorities AND they can be game changers at the ballot box, they are excited about the prospect. There are more than 30 districts where Democratic movers can have an immediate impact in the House races in November 2024. Read about the Democratic strategy here. And then visit the MoveIndigo.org to check out the exciting districts that want your vote and your voice. #2024elections #voteblue https://lnkd.in/eHFddFKy

The drama surrounding #redistricting in #newyorkstate continues and will escalate. Today (February 26, 2024), the state senate and assembly both voted to reject the maps approved (9-1) earlier this year by the state's Independent Redistricting Commission. The state #legislature, which is controlled by the #Democratic party, will now draw their own #Congressional maps, which almost certainly will ensure a legal challenge. Additionally, this development threatens to delay the state's primaries that are currently scheduled for June 25, 2024. While it is a winding and long road, stay tuned because the stakes are high. The #Republican party now controls the U.S. #Congress 219-213 with three vacancies. If the Democratic majority in the New York statehouse can thread the needle and create a durable map that provides advantages to Democratic candidates, the majority of the #houseofrepresentatives very well could be decided in New York in the #2024elections. The Hill has a nice article below and I have also included articles from the The Washington Post, Washington Examiner, and New York Post in the comments. #politics #elections #publicpolicy https://lnkd.in/e6MzqWE7

"House Republicans' narrow majority could get even smaller if Democrats flip Santos' old seat on Tuesday. Former Rep. Tom Suozzi faces off against relative newcomer Republican Mazi Pilip in a costly and closely watched race. The outcome could provide early indications of November's elections. Republicans hope to maintain a competitive edge in the nation's suburbs, while Democrats seek to flip the seat. Immigration policies and ties to former leaders are key issues in the campaign. One vote could make a major difference in the House. #Election2022 #HouseRepublicans #TomSuozzi #MaziPilip #SuburbanPolitics"

It appears that the long saga related to the #redistricting of the 26 #Congressional seats in #newyorkstate has come to an end. As lohud reports, after minor modifications to the Independent Redistricting Panel's map, the state legislature has approved new districts that will be used for the June 25, 2024, primary and November 5, 2024 #elections. At this time, it does not appear that the new map will be challenged in court. According to The Record (see comments below for full article), the new maps leave 16 of the state's 26 districts intact. However, they do make changes to the districts now held by U.S. Representatives Mark Molinaro (R), Pat Ryan (D), Tom Suozzi (D), and Brandon Williams (R). The changes will likely shore up seats held by Ryan and Suozzi while presenting some level of challenge to Representatives Molinaro and Williams in their reelection bids. Additional articles from CNN and Troy Record are posted below in the comments for those who are interested. #politics #congress

Forgive my rant, but I’m for a democracy consisting of two or more strong pro-democracy parties that follow whatever process they choose for fielding popular / qualified candidates who give the party the best shot at winning general elections. That kind of democracy may not require, and may be antithetical to, the practice of nominating candidates through primary elections. No other democracy in the world does this and it’s the source of much of our democratic dysfunction here. Democracy in the modern sense doesn’t require, and can’t exist with, every single vital decision being made through popular vote. The choice among nominees in general elections is where popular vote should decide. Everything leading up to that can follow whatever process the parties deem to be best, and the fear of failing in general elections is what will discipline them to get it right at the nomination stage.
Would you like to elect more common sense, problem solving leaders? Then we need better, common sense #elections. Please read the op-ed below! BOTH major political parties oppose our efforts to give ALL voters more power through more open, inclusive and competitive elections. From John & Jeremy's op-ed ... "The way we conduct primary elections in our country is outdated, exclusionary and leads to a Congress and state legislatures that represent smaller and smaller bands of partisans, not the broad electorate." Our political operating system is in desperate need of upgrading. The current system doesn't reward common sense problem solvers, it rewards the most extreme and divisive actors. It rewards stalemate and the status quo and an entire "politics industry" that can make more $$$ by NOT solving problems, and blaming everything on "the other side." I'm proud to call John Opdycke and Jeremy Gruber friends. They are fellow reform warriors who have been on this mission for much longer than me. They care deeply about our country and the millions of voters who are exhausted with or disenfranchised by our current system. If you want more common sense leaders, join us at Veterans for All Voters and Open Primaries as we continue building a movement for more open, inclusive and common sense elections. Onward!

From The Independent reviving this oldie but goodie I wrote in February 2020, ahead of the 2020 US elections. In it, I argue: "If a Democratic candidate is elected to be the United States’ 47th president on November 3rd, it will be despite [the] unresolved intra-party struggle." What we have come to remember of the 2020 race was the #pandemic overhang, the close election result, January 6th and all things #electionintegrity. Yet, there is another lesser noticed trend-line that remains salient for the #2024 #USelections: the question of party (dis)unity. Last time around, President Biden emerged from a wide field of primary entrants, sidestepping the question of what next for the progressive wing of the party. Now with the #israelhamaswar and #foreignpolicy on everyone's mind, polarized US voters will confront head-on the state of party politics in America. #geopolitics #risk
Opinion: Democrats don't realize they've set themselves up to fail against Trump in November

Think Biden can’t be replaced as the nominee for the Democrats? About a month ago, Nicole Kelly and I wrote a piece for The Federalist showing just how easy it would be, under DNC rules and state laws, to replace Biden before, during, or even after the Democrat Convention in Chicago. This week’s debate may start that process. #Biden #Democrats #DemocraticConvention #TheFederalist #Debate #2024Elections

This is why California's Citizen Redistricting Commission matters, and voters in Ohio should vote to support the creation of an independent redistricting commission: "The Cook Political Report?defines?swing districts as those in which the election results are within five points of the nation's overall vote. For example, if the national vote is 50% for Republicans and 50% for?Democrats, a swing seat would be any seat where the district voted within five points of the national vote in favor of either party.?Over the past 25 years, however, the number of competitive districts has been cut in half. Beyond just the shrinking number of total competitive seats, many of the competitive seats are located in just two states:?New York?and?California...In both?New York?and?California, redistricting is handled by an independent redistricting commission." #FairMaps #IndependentRedistricting #OhioVoteYes California Citizens Redistricting Commission Common Cause League of Women Voters
