Just over 29% of Michiganders age 50 and older, and 35% of Michigan women age 50 and older, said they take care of at least one person with a health condition or disability.? That's just one finding from the latest "poll extra" from the Michigan Poll on Healthy Aging — conducted by the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation with support from the Health Fund — which looks at the experiences, attitudes, and needs of caregivers in our state. If you're over 50, there's a 1 in 4 chance you're a caregiver to at least one person with a health issue or disability, whether it's your own child, parent or in-law, or a friend or neighbor. And if you're a woman in your 50s, like me, the odds are much higher. That's why I am proud to have written this summary of some new poll data showing who today's over-50 caregivers are, who they're caring for, and what they know and think about regional and federal support programs. This topic is a hot one for the upcoming election and beyond. https://lnkd.in/gxPYcT9J

Over 25% of Americans Aged 50+ Are Now Caregivers A new poll by the University of Michigan reveals that more than 1 in 4 Americans over the age of 50 are caregivers, often looking after family members or friends with health issues or disabilities. This responsibility is particularly common among those in their 50s and early 60s, with 30% of this group providing care, compared to 23% of those over 65. These findings underscore the importance of raising awareness about support programs for caregivers and the need for greater assistance from policymakers. A recent University of Michigan survey shows that over 25% of Americans aged 50 and older are caregivers, often helping loved ones manage physical disabilities, memory problems, mobility issues, and hearing/vision impairments. The survey also found that many caregivers are unaware of local resources to help them. ? InnovAge’s PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) is one of the options many don’t realize is available to help support caring for their aging loved ones. This model offers a comprehensive range of center-based and in-home services, including medical care, dental services, meals, community activities, and transportation. PACE comes at no cost for eligible seniors who have Medicare and Medicaid coverage. ? This highlights the importance of increasing awareness and expanding access to PACE and other critical senior care resources so caregivers can focus on what truly matters—being fully present with their loved ones. ? #FamilyCaregivers #SeniorCare #CaregiverSupport #HealthyAging ? New survey data from the University of Michigan National Poll on Aging published this week shows how major population shifts are driving substantial changes in the ways families experience caregiving—and tells a powerful story of how caregiving responsibilities are expanding each and every year as our population ages. Some key findings: - More than 1 in 4 people age 50 and older helps take care of at least one family member or friend who has a health issue or disability; - 1 in 10 caregivers in their 50s and early 60s are juggling taking care of three or more people; - About 32% of women aged 50 or older are caregivers, compared with 22% of men in the same age group; - The most common health issue that caregivers help their friends or family with was a physical disability or mobility challenge, followed by memory or thinking issues, and vision or hearing impairments Learn more about their findings—including how many caregivers over 50 still don’t fully understand what resources are available to them for help, and how caregivers look at the cost of caregiving—here: https://hubs.ly/Q02Kzks90 #research #caregivingdata #eldercare

By 2030, older persons are projected to outnumber youth globally, with this increase most rapid in developing countries. This demographic shift has significantly transformed the caregiving landscape, encompassing a wide range of needs for both paid and unpaid support in formal and informal settings. As populations age, the demand for comprehensive healthcare, care, and social support services has grown substantially, particularly for older persons with conditions such as dementia. In recognition of these challenges and opportunities, today's 34th commemoration of the United Nations #InternationalDayofOlderPersons focuses on the theme of "Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide."

I am an Executive Board member of Elder Options, the area agency on aging for 16 counties around Alachua. Elder Options is seeking mission-aligned individuals with a strong commitment to voluntarism and advocacy for seniors throughout our 16-county region. Elder Option's mission is to identify the needs of older adults, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers, as well as develop plans to meet the growing needs of our community. We do this by providing some direct services, but we also contract with local agencies to deliver services. The services we contract out to local agencies are monitored regularly, ensuring good administration of funds. Opportunities include: Board of Directors The Board of Directors provides governance, guidance, and strategy to lead Elder Options in serving seniors, caregivers, and persons living with disabilities. One of our goals includes increasing community partnerships so we may serve more seniors, informal caregivers, and adults with disabilities. The Board meets quarterly at Elder Options headquarters in Gainesville, Fl, and also online via Zoom. Advisory Council The Advisory Council is a voluntary group of citizens who provide information, guidance, advice, and support to Elder Options to plan, develop, coordinate and administer services to older persons. They also serve as a critical linkage between the agency and the local elderly community. The Advisory Council's most important obligation is to help the agency carry out the intent and objectives of the Older Americans Act. It fulfills this obligation by working through the Elder Options Board of Directors and Staff, and through community leadership. The Advisory Council meets quarterly to provide valuable feedback and information related to the communities within our 16-county service area. Representatives should reside in the county that they will represent. Volunteers are needed for the following counties: Alachua, Citrus, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hernando, Lake, Marion, Sumter, Suwannee, and Union. To ask questions or learn more about Elder Options, please contact Kathy Dorminey, [email protected] or www.agingresources.org.

With increased longevity and shrinking family networks, more and more people are likely to find themselves in the "sandwich generation”, caring for aging parents, children, and sometimes even grandparents or other aging loved ones simultaneously. These dual – and often competing –?caregiving responsibilities can take a significant physical, emotional, and financial toll. By acknowledging these challenges and offering support, we can help alleviate some of the burdens caregivers face. That’s why #Papa partners with health plans and employers to provide much-needed respite and peace of mind through our network of #PapaPals, including for caregivers who can’t always be nearby. Learn more about these rising challenges and the need for action in this HuffPost article: https://lnkd.in/eft9DW3q

The Tennessee Department of Health hosted an event in West Tennessee on May 13th, focusing on the efforts of local and regional health departments to achieve Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) recognition in partnership with Trust for America's Health (TFAH). During the event, discussions centered around strategies to foster an age-friendly ecosystem within the community. This recognition underscores the importance of integrating public health practices that support healthy aging and signifies a dedicated effort to position healthy aging as a central function of public health initiatives. Participants at the event included healthcare professionals, community leaders, and public health officials, all collaborating to share best practices and innovative approaches for enhancing the well-being of older adults. Key topics covered included the development of supportive environments, enhancing access to healthcare services tailored for the aging, and promoting preventive measures to address common health challenges faced by aging populations including dementia, aging in place, and caregiver supports. The initiative to seek AFPHS recognition involves a comprehensive approach to public health that encompasses various aspects of an age-friendly ecosystem, such as safe and accessible public spaces, community engagement opportunities, and services that promote independence and quality of life for older adults. By committing to these principles, the Tennessee Department of Health aims to create a sustainable model that other regions can replicate, ensuring that the needs of older adults are met with dignity and respect. Through collaboration with TFAH, the Tennessee Department of Health is working to set a precedent for other states to follow, highlighting the pivotal role of public health in supporting an aging society. This effort demonstrates a proactive stance in addressing the demographic shifts and health challenges associated with an aging population, ultimately contributing to healthier and more vibrant communities. #TNDAC #dementia #Tennessee #AFPHS #TFAH #caregiver #healthyaging #aging #prevention #health #JacksonState #west
