Today’s first “trialogue” between the European Commission Council of the European Union, and European Parliament on proposed changes to the European Union Deforestation Regulation #EUDR has ended in a tense standoff. The Commission and Council will only agree to a 12-month delay to the law’s implementation timetable – as proposed by the Commission on October 3 – while the political attack dogs from the Parliament are still angling to take a bite out of the substance of the law itself. The stalemate will last until the next trialogue, which will take place on, or before, December 3. So the wait continues to see if a law fundamental to protecting the world's forests will be delayed but left intact; or whether it will suffer a major blow, with critical impacts for people, wildlife and the climate. Today’s decision by parliamentarians in Europe to approve a raft of amendments to the European Union Deforestation Regulation #EUDR sets in train a dangerous game of cat and mouse between the Parliament, European Commission and member states. While the forthcoming trialogue looms, the future of the world’s forests, and the people and wildlife that depend on them for survival, is left hanging by a thread. And it leaves companies and producer countries who have readied themselves for compliance in legal limbo. History will judge these Parliamentary shenanigans badly, while in the meantime forests will fall with all the impacts that brings for the climate and Nature emergencies. More analysis on next steps from our Policy Director Julian Oram who is in Brussels. A recent poll shows that 75% of citizens in the Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Sweden support the Nature Restoration Law (NRL). They believe in urgent action to restore ecosystems for better health, farming, and economic benefits. Despite the clear public opinion, these EU Member States are not supporting the Nature Restoration Law. Succow Foundation supports the NRL and urges, alongside the #RestoreNature coalition, that opposing governments listen to their citizens and adopt the law. ???? Eleven ministers from Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Slovenia have sent a letter urging the opposing EU countries to support the NRL at the Environment Council meeting on June 17th. https://lnkd.in/epMTs3jv Let's work together to protect our nature and future! #NatureRestorationLaw #RestoreNature #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #VoteFutureEU #VoteForNature BirdLife International ClientEarth WWF Greifswald Moor Centrum ?Restore Nature Coalition

This troubling narrative isn't limited to Slovakia; it's spreading across Europe, threatening to derail years of progress. We must prioritize science-driven strategies to tackle the planetary crisis and preserve our biodiversity. Slovakia's rich natural heritage is at stake, and we need to counteract these misleading perspectives. Dive into the article to understand the broader implications ?

#Wetlands are diverse ecosystems like lagoons, swamps, and peat bogs. They serve as crucial CO2 sinks, capable of sequestering carbon for millennia. This new investigation by Steven Fox Maria Delaney Giulia Bonelli Guillaume Amouret Elisabetta Tola and Swantje Furtak delves into the urgent issue of how commercial interests, often supported by public funds, are ravaging Europe's remaining wetlands. The journalists reveal the alarming reality that many of Europe's wetlands, vital for biodiversity and carbon storage, have been irreparably damaged by decades of unchecked industrial activities. Ireland has lost 90% of its wetlands, Germany, 80%, and Italy, 75%. Meanwhile authorities turn a blind eye to this destructive exploitation, and political inertia hinders environment restoration efforts. Moreover, conservative politicians have been opposing legislation like the Nature Restoration Law, which further exacerbates the plight of farmers grappling with the consequences of wetland degradation. Time is running out to find a solution for the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation. Now that the European Commission has proposed a 12-month delay we strongly urge lawmakers in both the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to swiftly adopt the proposal and avoid a lengthy debate around the contents of the Regulation. ? The #EUDR has garnered widespread support, and Mars has proudly been at the forefront of this movement. Maintaining the current legal text will help us avoid unnecessary delays and ensure that the significant progress made by industry, our partner countries, smallholders and Member States towards compliance is not undone. ? By supporting the timely passing of the Commission’s proposal, we can protect the world’s forests and provide the European food sector with the legal certainty it needs to thrive??? #Deforestation #Mars #ResponsibleSourcing

?? Time to restore nature ?? ??The Environment Council of the EU gave its final green light to the Nature Restoration Law, marking a historic result and huge win for Europe’s nature after months of negotiations! This vote will hopefully help us to restore and protect nature, also through more sustainable farming practices such as organic and biodynamic farming. ?? According to a study carried out by the European Environment Agency, 81% of European habitats are in poor shape. Therefore, the Nature Restoration Law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. ?? To achieve these objectives, Member States must set measures to restore at least 30% of habitats covered by the law – including forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, and lakes - from poor to good condition by 2030 and 90% by 2050. It is now in their hands to implement this crucial legislation as soon as possible. ?? Find out more: https://bit.ly/3z4bEnX ?? Coming soon in all EU countries
“And nature was restored in Europe happily ever after”: this is the happy ending that we finally got after Monday’s vote on the Nature Restoration Law! The historic approval of the law and the perfect conclusion to a troublesome story would have never been possible without such overwhelming support: from NGOs to businesses, from scientists to activists, from decision-makers to citizens, millions of people mobilised to safeguard the future of Europe’s nature. Thanks to their voices, the European Parliament and Council decided to listen and support this law. We are very much aware of the current climate and biodiversity crises, but now the EU has an additional great tool to tackle them effectively. By bringing back our nature, Europe will be able to better face and mitigate the effects of the droughts, floods and other extreme events it is already experiencing. A special thank you goes to the whole #RestoreNature coalition and its supporters, who worked restlessly to make this success possible. ??

6-9 June European Elections: European Nature/Climate, Democracy and Security are under threat due to unsustainable industries, influence from none-democratic countries/organisations and war "around the corner". In this situation, it is important that pro-russian, eurosceptics and fossil industry lobby do not gain too much political power over the next five years. Please, grab your friends and family and go vote for a strong and democratic Europe and a Europe where we protect our life essential Nature. If the ?kosystems collapse on a big scale - the food scarcity is a fact. "Our assessment shows that safeguarding the health and resilience of Europe’s nature, and people’s well-being, requires fundamental changes to the way we produce and consume food, manage and use forests, and build cities. These efforts need to be coupled with better implementation and enforcement of conservation policies, a focus on nature restoration, as well as increasingly ambitious climate action, especially in the transport and energy sector." https://lnkd.in/eavkd3qV
