We have our summer intern already on week two. Every Friday he has to report on the project that he's responsible for. He makes us aware of urgent items and things needing action. We have different people on our team that work with him on different parts of his project. That way he's accountable for his work while getting exposure to working with everyone on our team including Grant La Bounty, Chris Vassilian and Jeannette Cano. That gives him experience from four different points of view. But ultimately, we make sure one person is responsible for his success and so that he knows who he can turn to when thinking about future direction without ambiguity. This will be the second year of working with other industry partners to collaborate on meetings together so that our interns get to meet their interns and make new contacts. How do you manage your summer interns? How do you make the most of the summer for them and for your team all at the same time?

Some of the students got stuck after "What's your name?" and "What do you do?" at our networking workshop. They feel like they cannot ask anything not professionally-related during networking. We told them to ask about their job as follow ups: What is your favorite part about your job? What are your challenges? What is your company culture like? Meanwhile, in the back of the room, Michelle Quevedo-Penn and I reminisced about me breaking the ice by talking about a great carnitas joint around the corner from where we were and how she was looking for ways to welcome new team members. ?? So, what is your networking style? Are you all business? Or are you more casual? What are some of your networking icebreaker questions? And why is it not "What's your favorite dinosaur?" #networkingtips #professionaldevelopment
“You keep saying ‘Your network is your net worth,’ but how DO you network?” We are so glad you asked, interns, because Friday’s summer workshop covered networking best practices, among other things! What an action-packed morning at LA Harbor College for our interns! We started with a networking practice. Then our newest board member Michelle Quevedo-Penn of Poppy Bank answered all the burning financial literacy questions. (No, credit cards are NOT free money!) Then a special treat! Los Angeles Harbor College President Dr. Luis Dorado dropped by to give a warm welcome to our interns before they set off on a campus tour. Thank you for being such a wonderful host! Special thanks to our internship program sponsors who helped fuel our students’ career dreams: Port of Los Angeles and Prologis! #expinternship #opportunityengine #workforcedevelopment #careerreadiness

I've benefitted immensely from the teachings of Mr. Koch over the course of my career. The management philosophy he created and continues to refine - Principle Based Management (PBM) - has been a true game-changer for me and countless others in the Stand Together universe. I'm especially grateful for his focus on ???????????????????????? ?????????????????? - a mindset rooted in openness to exploring new approaches. This perspective has guided me toward unexpected paths of creativity, opportunity, and fulfillment that I never could have envisioned! These brief slides provided below are just the tip of the iceberg. Check out some additional resources via the links in my comments to learn more about PBM - a remarkable framework for thriving in business, philanthropy, and life! #BelieveInPeople #management #transformation #innovation

*INTERN VIDEO CHALLENGE – Video 1* Like many of you, we have interns working with us at Roberts & Ryan this summer.? It’s important to us that it’s a mutually beneficial relationship – we get some work out of them and they learn in the process! ? We do our best to give them as much exposure to different parts of the business as possible.? They work with our fixed income and equity teams, help with our corporate access efforts, and spend time on the NYSE trading floor. ? We thought it would be fun to have them break into teams and make videos about the firm.? The idea being that it will be a catalyst for them to take a deeper look at the firm as a whole.? We have a couple of groups coming through, so I’m going to put the videos out as I get them. ? This first video was done by Quamique Marcial (“Q”) and Louis Davis, 2 college students that came to us from the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, and Conrad Luce. It was interesting to me – and made me happy – to see their take on Roberts & Ryan. This video was done entirely by the interns, and this first group was a little pressed for time.? Can’t wait to see what the other teams put together! I would love to hear your thoughts! #interns #internship #summerintern #internchallenge #futureleaders #veteranownedfirm #capitalmarkets #financialliteracy
