The demands and complexities of the law enforcement mission have never been greater. For your review an article in Police 1, "Charting the course for 2024: A 7-step strategy for police leaders to navigate complex times." Recognizing that there is no one size fits all solution it is my hope that you find some of the information provided helpful. Building trust and gaining the respect of communities we serve remains paramount in our profession. Also provided is a collaborative white paper- "Building Trust Between Police and Community in Michigan." Additionally, Police 1 training is offered free of charge to subscribers. That link is also provided below in the comment section.

Read my new op-ed for Slate Magazine. In it, I explore a surprising benefit of prosecutors reviewing past sentences: it can actually help them recruit the next generation of attorneys. This becomes even more pressing as our country faces a prosecutor shortage, which may actually be detrimental to reform efforts. In addition to reuniting families and communities, innovations like PIR also challenge the adversarial nature of our system, and they "encourage people who might otherwise not see themselves in these roles—first-generation college students, people of color, and women—to consider prosecution as a means of ensuring justice." Black Lives Matter is more than just a movement; it’s a powerful affirmation of our existence, our struggles, and our triumphs. It is a declaration to those who doubt our worth: Black Lives Matter! In a recent Town Hall with ABC 33/40, we discussed the urgent need for a multifaceted approach to public safety. For far too long, those in power have neglected our communities, diverting vital resources away from education, healthcare, and housing, while pouring money into policing. This must change! "Investing in our communities is the true path to safety and justice." - Eric Hall We demand investments that uplift and empower us—education that inspires, healthcare that heals, and opportunities that foster growth. When we prioritize these areas over the criminalization and harm of our people, we can create real, lasting change. Let’s come together to ignite deeper conversations about community safety and solidarity. It’s time to envision a future where our neighborhoods thrive and our voices are heard. #InvestInBlackLives #CommunitySafety #TogetherWeRise #BlackLivesMatter #BlackJoy #EndPoliceBrutality #EmpowerOurCommunities

My latest journal article analyses how economic status, gender, and age overlap to shape and construct young men's experiences with policing. To do this, I locate social categories and identities within a broader social framing that attends to power, generational hierarchy, and context. Further, I interrogate the interconnections between multiple formations of oppression related to crime, criminal justice, and conceptualisations of deviance in Mathare and Kaptembwo informal settlements.

Place matters. The voices we center in these places matter. How we listen and learn together matters. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, Inc, we focus on centering educators within historical spaces and rich history, creating thoughtful, well-informed perspectives that give us the foundation to understand how we teach, learn, and work toward an empowered American society. A question posed to me recently—“What do you fear or want to know about the unknown?”—reminded me that we can’t fully understand what we don’t yet see. The best way forward is to bring primary and secondary sources, including those with lived experience, into our conversations. This includes everything from founding documents to the insights of individuals directly impacted by the justice system. We value lived experience. We believe the voices of individuals who have had lived experience with the criminal justice system are central to our work I’m incredibly proud of our Education team’s dedication to this work and how they continue to grow in their commitment to a more perfect union. #JusticeEd #LaurenZalut #RyanHall #JusticeEdCollab
