What are we teaching clients in substance abuse services? Boundary Setting: Substance abuse treatment programs often emphasize the importance of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries. An example of poor boundaries would be if we did not set appointments for the clients and encouraged them to walk in offices at anytime this would create confusion among clients about appropriate behavior and limits. We want the clients to grow in Independence . This is why we create reasonable , measurable and obtainable goals that the client can take pride in their own accomplishments. We do not want to create a faulty dependence for the client on the staff or clinician. Many individuals work in the field of substance abuse with the best intentions. We should always be mindful that everytime we are doing for an individual, “what they can do for themselves.” we are denying them their opportunity to grow in self esteem while affirming for them that they are not capable.
