What matters more than the blinding and relentless focus on skills when it comes to workforce capability? As Eric Schmidt, the former CEO and Chairman of Google, said, "I hire for two things: courage and perseverance. Effective employees bring energy to translate good ideas into action. And it takes courage and perseverance to ensure those good ideas and those actions result in outcomes and impact."
The last two decades of the tech tsunami has led too many corporate L&D functions astray as we have sought the holy grail of performance to meet the exponential changes occurring across our businesses. And for the last few years, we've landed on "skills" as the answer. Which has led us to a bulging ecosystem of new software and services promising to solve all our performance problems (if we just buy a taxonomy and a platform).
Employees aren't asking just for discrete skilling. They're asking for a career journey that meets their aspirations. A clear roadmap with constructive feedback, mentoring, and realistic expectations for their future. They're exhausted with the nerve-wracking focus on "your skills are out of date every 25 seconds." They're exasperated with managers and leaders who can't help match them to a meaningful work experience and career journey.
Instead of this ridiculously expensive and time-consuming focus on discrete skills systems, L&D should recalibrate and focus more on personality assessments for development, job tryouts and shadowing, mentoring, developing leaders as coaches, creating and expanding gateway roles, offering short-form credentialing, and providing team-based performance training. Let's don't waste yet another decade searching for yet another answer to a problem that's not really there. Let's harness a learning ecosystem that harmonizes human capability with what comes natural to us: connecting with each other, learning by doing, practicing learning agility, and designing substantive solutions that bring out the best in how humans perform.
There's nothing more depressing than the thought of looking at my "skills profile" and seeing a laundry list of what an algorithm thinks will make me successful today and 30 minutes from now... and then clicking me over to a boring eLearning course.
