As a software engineer, you know that the industry moves fast. It can be hard to keep up. But, there are 3 skills that you need to master to succeed: 1?? Problem-solving - Think creatively - Look for solutions - Test and iterate 2?? Communication - Explain complex ideas - Collaborate with team members - Communicate with stakeholders 3?? Continuous learning - Stay up-to-date with the industry - Learn new languages and frameworks - Read blogs and books If you can master these skills, you'll be well on your way to becoming a successful software engineer. What other skills do you think are important for software engineers to have?

An interest topic of conversation came up at a dinner with young colleagues recently. To paraphrase: “Entry-level software engineers are asked to do things that are neither challenging nor interesting.” Let me turn this around. Why do we, as software engineers, get hired in the first place? These are the expectations of software engineers: 1) Solve problems someone else identified by applying solutions someone else outlined, 2) Identify problems no one else noticed and solve them in a way someone else helped you with, 3) Identify problems and develop solutions, 4) Take ownership of both problems and solutions, Don’t get stuck on point 1. That is how you start. Don't forget the other 3 points, because that's how you grow.

You are a senior software engineer if you take on the most boring and annoying tasks of your team. Senior software engineering is a mindset — it shows that you understand the importance of getting things done, no matter how mundane the tasks might be. It shows that you understand that business priorities come before your personal preferences. Being a leader means dealing with both the good and bad aspects of the job. #softwareengineering

As software engineers, our job isn't exactly as you might expect. It's not just fixing bugs. It's not just writing code. It's not just reviewing code. It's not just pushing to prod Friday at 5:00 PM before the holidays. Sure, our jobs include those things (including the odd breakage in prod), but it's more than that. As software engineers, we: - Solve problems - Deliver value to customers - Help level up those around us - Collaborate with our team members - Communicate clearly in many formats - Fix the bugs that we caused in prod on Friday at 5:00 PM And of course: We learn. As software engineers, we often see production issues as a big burden. But I've found these moments are actually some of the best opportunities for learning and growth. When our services run smoothly, it's easy to coast without really understanding the underlying systems. But when we hit a serious problem - like tracing through 10 different services to find the root cause - that's when the real learning happens. Looking back, those tough, stressful issues that kept me up at night taught me the most. Doing a deep dive expanded my knowledge by 50% more than a typical onboarding period. So next time a major production problem arises, don't just see it as a burden. View it as a chance to sharpen your skills and become a stronger engineer.
