Leveraging cultural events to tell a brand story is not a new formula. And despite no actual football being played, the #NFLDraft is a cultural event. An average of?12.1 million viewers?tuned in on television and streaming platforms, the highest viewership since 2021 and a 6% increase from last year. Many sponsorship rights holders wait for the property to do the heavy lifting to tell their own brand story, as if simply buying a sponsorship is the end of the road. Brands which proactively leverage the rights available are better positioned to insert their own message into the larger conversation around a cultural event, such as the NFL Draft. USAA and 160over90 inserted a military appreciation and #SaluteToService message into a cultural event which doesn't necessarily have a focus on the military. The message... ? ...was authentic. ? ...was relevant to the cultural event. ? ...included star power. ? ...reached an audience at scale. ? ...was specific to the brand and the brand story. I'm quick to point out when a brand does #MilitaryMarketing wrong. It's a lot more fun to point out when a brand does it right.

Pepsi Once Had The World's Sixth Largest Military You might have heard of world nations that hold the largest militaries. However, for a soda company to hold the 6th largest military in the world seems straight out of a Hollywood movie. In 1989, PepsiCo Inc. acquired 17 submarines, a cruiser, a frigate and a destroyer from the Soviet Union. The fact that Pepsi possessed the 6th largest fleet is not far from the truth. According to an analysis of?Jane’s fighting ships 1898-90,?a country operating a squadron of 17 submarines would have tied with India for possessing the seventh-largest fleet of attack submarines. This means Pepsi technically tied with India for the position of the 6th largest fleet in the world. The question here is how a soda company came to possess such a large fleet. Also, how it was more of a business transaction rather than a possession of an operating military fleet. Recent changes to military moving service standards are raising serious concerns for military families. Under the new regulations, companies like U-Haul and various movers from Craigslist and Facebook are classified as official military movers. This shift has excluded reputable moving firms—80% of the industry currently serving military personnel— have been informed that their Independent Contractor business models do not align with HomeNOTsafe. USTC and HSA's decisions to replace 80% of current qualified movers with inferior providers willing to operate for minimal profit. By significantly lowering entry requirements for the HomeNOTsafe system, USTC has allowed the least competent bottom 20% of the industry to participate without oversight. As a result, military families can no longer choose their moving service providers and are exposed to companies that fail to meet quality standards. Notably, Tier One Relocations, with a low 1.7 Google rating, and KBR are now managing the GHC contract through HomeNOTsafe. Military families should be cautious of anyone claiming to be an official military mover, as this designation has lost its value due to lowered standards.
