Coyote roll call! Who’s headed downtown to pack Petco Park for Connect Innovation Day? An event so large it requires a stadium that could fit my entire college town. Innovation Day, aka Five10Thirty, was hatched by Connect to help seed the future of innovation in San Diego. I was chatting with Mike about the name over the weekend. The idea (and maybe you've already guessed it) is to set the stage for 5, 10, and 30 years from now. This event is a pretty amazing cross-section of the entire tech and entrepreneurship ecosystem here in San Diego. There's really no other way to see it all in one place in a single day. Admittedly, it's still a challenge to see it all in one day. But I'm still going to try! My strategy for an event like this you ask? Meet up early downtown before the event and link up with a few folks to warm up. Do a set of coyote pushups, then head in to wander. I love to see who's there, what's there, and all the happenings. Perhaps we can meet up? Howl at me. OH, I got the email this morning. Did you see that Hussein is rolling out the lastest Startup Beach innovation: targeted networking at the event?!! That just fires me up! Happy Five10Thirty and many thanks to the Connect team for all they do for our ecosystem. This theoretical concept is a big reason why I decided to take on this project (INNOVATE? Kansas City) for the region. In a shared mission to break down siloes, foster collaboration, and highlight the amazing work being done by entities and individuals in the region. It been an honor to work alongside and witness the work being done at Keystone Innovation District. Truly special. For example, for Start it Accelerate | @KBC we drew inspiration from living organisms that have influenced major technological innovations, like geckos and tardigrades, reminding startups of this incubator of the power of adaptability and resilience ?? In the office of Board of Innovation, we celebrated their playful company culture by connecting the nature elements to it. <<CAPITAL>> Today we are hosting Sk?ne Capital Day together with Minc Krinova Incubator & Science Park and HETCH. Nine companies from Sk?ne-based incubators will pitch their business ideas to potential investors. The first joint investor gathering was held last spring at Ideon Science Park in Lund, and now this time at Minc in Malm?. Around 100 people are joining, among them 60 investors. The nine companies pitching are all in a growth phase where new capital is essential, and they are all newly established program companies within their respective incubators. The companies seek investments ranging from 2 to 5 million SEK. MADH from Minc is a global denim collective that combines innovation and sustainability to create custom-made jeans with a focus on personal expression. Plockhugget from Minc has developed a certification to ensure timber has been selectively harvested. According to the company, the certification arose because both producers and suppliers of timber have begun demanding more sustainable materials. CuraStream AI.ai from Minc uses AI to streamline medical record management and improve healthcare workflows with a focus on security and simplicity. Soop System from Hetch offers a digital tool to simplify store management by optimizing manual tasks. Allie from Hetch is an app, or "a digital best friend," as the company calls it, designed to prevent loneliness. Bauger from Hetch provides funeral homes and families with a transparent, user-friendly platform to facilitate the planning and execution of funerals. Agrodit from Krinova offers real-time soil measurement tools to help avoid extra work hours for maintenance and installation while providing reliable, practical data to customers. Nothing Fishy from Krinova manufactures frozen, vegan fish substitutes. According to the company, the texture, taste, appearance, and smell of the products are identical to real fish. Green Urbansights from Ideon works on creating green urban landscapes and solutions for sustainable cities. The company aims to streamline the management of urban trees using satellite imagery and AI for quick, cost-effective inventories and insights into tree vitality. ☆ Tour de Founders ☆ Yesterday, we took a trip out to our local stadium - not to watch AGF in action, but to meet with a cool team brewing on a device that will revolutionize the field of sports communication and performance. ? Vokalo is building a new sports wearable that captures and analyses the communication of athletes in action to improve individual and team performance. We had a great chat with the co-founder Jens Knudsen about some of the unique challenges that come with being a hardware startup. One of the big ones? Funding! Hardware startups often encounter the catch-22 of needing capital to build their product, but finding that investors usually want to see traction before they invest. The solution according to Jens is all about finding the right investors - those who really get the hardware game and ideally have deep industry knowledge in the field you’re working in. Europe’s newest startup campus, Wintercircus Ghent opened its doors last week. Here’s what you need to know. Wintercircus is exactly what it says. It’s a 15,000 m2 former circus area (and car garage) now transformed into a stunning startup campus. Breezing through the content, you pick up on similar lingo… “A vibrant community where innovation and creativity thrive.” “A startup campus building the future of technology…” But a few things stand out. First, there’s a clear commitment to opening up to the public. From bougie bars to a bakery, gardened rooftop, sushi restaurant and more, the campus steps beyond what we generally think of when we think about “the community.” Next, you’ll find a real focus on curating who’s inside. A thorough selection committee and criteria means not everyone will make it inside. All this paired with a pretty unique renovation project.
