Some experts say that California could look to Texas for career education ideas as families and?students increasingly?question the long-term value?and costs of a traditional four-year college diploma. While higher education enrollments suffered pandemic-era drops nationally, community colleges that concentrate on vocational programs showed a 16% increase last fall. That’s a sizable rise compared with two-year public schools that transfer students to universities — those saw an increase of less than 1%,?federal statistics?show. More than anything, some experts say, Texas State Technical College's focus almost entirely on job training and career preparation gives it a leg up and has boosted its enrollment much faster than regular community colleges since the pandemic losses.

This is how it is done and Texas is again leading the way. The Texas State Technical College System is implementing career education programs in Texas, which are closely tied to specific industries and aim to prepare students for high-wage jobs. These programs, modeled after Texas's approach, emphasize collaboration between schools and industry partners to offer students hands-on experience and relevant skills. They are not following the community college model, but charting a different path. This is exciting to see! #education https://lnkd.in/g5ZZMRXn

Listen, I'm all-in on the increase in young people choosing a career in the trades. I'm encouraging my nephew in this pursuit right now. But headlines like this one irk me: https://lnkd.in/ehVb7vE6 One of the three examples the article cites went to a technical school and got an associate degree! Guess what, folks? That's COLLEGE! And it can help a lot of young people get a great start in the trades. Did you know that, in the state of Kentucky at least, time spent enrolled in postsecondary technical educational programs often counts as years of work experience toward earning a journeyman's license in that trade? And that thanks to programs like the Kentucky Work Ready Scholarship, that education often comes at no or low cost? In other words, the opportunity cost of starting a trades career at a community college or technical school versus going to work right out of high school can be relatively low. College and trade careers don't have to be an "either/or" choice. They can be, and in many cases should be, a "both/and" proposition. Community colleges and technical schools are an awesome way to get started in the trades. Encourage young people to explore ALL their options out of high school and find what works best for them.

DID YOU KNOW? ?????? Despite federal funding through Perkins V legislation, Career and Technical Education (CTE) is often the lowest priority of a school budget. As technical schools fail, attitudes toward career education must change. Attitudes toward four-year college degrees have changed rapidly over the past decade, yet schools that offer career-focused associates degrees are still struggling to recruit. Unfortunately for students well-suited for career and technical education (CTE), the stigma against foregoing college remains intense. The recent failures of Pittsburgh Technical College and Triangle Tech, two schools that train young people (and older people) for careers as skilled workers, showcase the disruption in all types of higher education from economic and demographic shifts. It’s easy, in a world that has come to see four-year colleges as the only worthy post-secondary education, to consider these closures beneath notice. https://loom.ly/jfQeQPg

A recent EdSource article on Texas-style career education underscores the importance of preparing students with job-ready skills and the innovative approach Texas State Technical College has taken to do this so successfully. By tying educational programs to industry demands and wages, TSTC effectively bridges the gap between education and employment, benefiting both students and employers. This is the core of our mission at SkillsEngine and we are proud to be part of the work that TSTC is doing helping students and employers in Texas. The more I talk to recent college graduates, the more I am convinced that colleges will not survive the next decade as they are currently constructed. I believe they will be replaced by workforce development projects, the train people for specific careers carpentry to passing the bar. I do not know of a single person, but I have talked about their college education with they do not agree that four years of college could be simply accomplished in one year. Why do we continue to defy common sense? College education costing $200,000 or more simply has no no investment rationale. Let me know if you agree.
