Flexible Credential works by AUTOMATICALLY routing the transaction to the account with the appropriate transaction currency, whether someone is paying online or in-store. Here is an overview over some of the key offerings: - Visa Flexible Credentials: This feature allows users to seamlessly switch between different payment methods on a single card product, offering flexibility and customization. Already live in Asia, it will launch with Affirm in the US later this summer. - Enhanced Mobile Tap Features: Visa is introducing convenient functionalities such as Tap to Confirm, Tap to Add Card, and Tap to P2P, making mobile payments smoother and more secure. - Payment Passkey Service: To enhance security and streamline online payments, Visa is introducing Payment Passkey, which replaces passwords with biometric authentication, ensuring secure transactions with just a quick scan of a face or fingerprint. - Pay By Bank: With technology from Swedish acquisition Tink, Visa is expanding into the account-to-account payment space, offering a secure and efficient payment method. Visa's New Weapon?? - Flexible Credentials : Can it battle the regionally booming RTP Leaders ? UPI???? | Pix???? | Swish???? | PayNow???? | PromptPay, Inc.????....45+ Two weeks back Visa announced the "The Power of Seven". The seven new features aiming to improve the consumer experience. Among these, I felt one feature stands out - "Flexible Credentials" - A single digital card that can be switched between multiple funding sources(Debit, Credit, BNPL). This feature is announced with an aim for convenience, potential automation, and enhanced security with tokenized transactions. Almost all the instant payment methods mentioned above already stick to the principles of "Interoperability", that offers the flexibility to link multiple bank accounts, cards(RuPay in India) & Wallets. But, I see this dynamic switching can make lives juggle-free for many non-RTP markets, as you just need a single container that can hold all your payments suite. But with growing real-time payment(RTP) systems across the globe, how would the adoption of this feature looks in markets where instant payments reign supreme? Currently Visa's Tap & Pay has close to 65% global reach while India's UPI & Brazil's PIX has ~300 Mn & ~145 Mn users respectively. Notably these two RTP giants are rapidly expanding by partnering with multiple nations globally to make life of residents as well as tourists(e.g - UPI for tourists) easier. As per PYMNTS report in March 2024, over 56 countries already have live RTP infrastructures. Visa launches "Token for life" and cements itself as a tech company more than a payments company. "The announcements include the launch of Visa Flexible Credential, which enables users to toggle between debit, credit, rewards points, and buy now, pay later (BNPL) when completing a transaction." This wraps up all of your transactions in a nice little bow with a Visa label on it and gives flexibility around interchange rates applied depending on which product the customer chooses (and where you are in the world) "Click to Pay" is the other important discussion point. This has a couple of impacts with one of them being a way to limiting ApplePay in e-commerce but also, locking customers into the Visa ecosystem. ?? Where does it leave Least cost routing? I think that it kills it dead. ?? What about BNPL? I am shocked to see that Visa is in danger of losing its lead in the payment processing market. After reading its 120 pages of 2023 annual report. Visa made a net revenue of $32.7 billion last year. They earn money from three main sources: 1?? Consumer Payments: Processing payments for credit, debit, and prepaid cards. 2?? New Flows: Facilitating commercial and global money movement across Visa’s network of networks. This includes non-card flows by enabling P2P, B2C, B2B, and G2C payments. 3?? Value-Added Services: Providing backend solutions like issuing solutions, risk solutions, advisory services, and more. What might threaten Visa's business model? We're seeing more and more real-time payment (RTP) networks created and supported by local governments. These networks become alternatives to payment card schemes, like PIX in Brazil and UPI in India. It's more than just domestic transactions. With linkages such as PayNow in Singapore and UPI in India, cross-border RTP networks are advancing and will compete with Visa's cross-border business. Another significant threat is government-imposed market participation restrictions. Certain governments, including those of China, India, and Indonesia, have taken actions to promote domestic payment systems and/or specific issuers, payment networks, or processors. They do this by imposing regulations that favor domestic providers, local ownership requirements on processors, and data localization mandates, requiring that domestic processing be done within the country. Additionally, many jurisdictions around the world are regulating or influencing debit and credit interchange reimbursement rates in their regions, which could impact Visa's interchange rates and fees. My thoughts ??: The four-party model in card transactions balances the interests of each party. However, as governments and merchants discover cheaper, quicker, and safer ways to process payments with advancing technology. A change of payment processor becomes inevitable.
