I hate building construction analogies for software development for the exact reason Uwe shows here. We don't see changes on the level of "we need our single family home to be able to offer access to Neopanamax class cargo ships" posed to regular architects by clients, because one can immediately visualize the absurdity of wanting to dig a literally Panama-Canal-sized waterway towards a suburban home. Yet, in software, it's regularly "just a button" in the frontend to stakeholders. The functionality behind it, which might run fundamentally opposite to costly architectural decisions that have long been taken (not necessary deliberately), is invisible. So the team, under pressure to perform and with too little time to analyze it, will deliver that feature. Increasing server load tenfold and introducing complexities to data consistency that require constant attention by the DBA. In the end, at some point a cargo ship will sit next to that suburban home. Behind it, a trail of devastation, as the team had to pull it there, Fitzcarraldo-style.
