OK, here's a question. Say you're giving a presentation at a breakfast meeting back in the days when we were meeting physically. And right near the beginning of your speech, somebody knocks over a water glass and it falls to the floor and it splashes and everybody goes. What do you do? Well, here's how I handled that exact situation. First, I let the commotion settle a bit. And then I made a a dumb joke. I said something like, Gee, I guess I made a big splash at that table. They loved it. Sure was a corny joke, but it fit the mood and they thought it was fun. And they they realized the commotion was unscripted and a kind of a crummy joke was called for in that moment. My point is that. When you're speaking, you're a performer. The people listening to you are an audience, and that space you're occupying is a stage, and audiences expect performers on stages to put on shows. It's just the way we're wired. So you have to be attuned to everything that's happening around your speaking area slash stage when you're performing. If this construction outside and you can hear it. That becomes part of your show to some degree. You may wind up commenting on it or not. If it if it. If the audience can hear it, it's part of the show. If if somebody gets up and leaves, it changes the mood. Just got to be attuned to it. Now, some folks will say, but Mike, you know what if I don't feel like letting myself hang out like that to that extent when I'm doing a speech? And the answer is, you have to remember you're a show person, and if you do go with the flow, in the end the audience will remember that aspect of your entire talk, possibly more than even the material you were called on to talk about in the beginning.
