We have an opportunity to enrich our subjects by immersing children into far flung places that they would never have the chance to visit in person. ??We can inspire creative writing by taling the children into the setting. ??We can visualise a historical place as we learn about how people used to live. ??We can visit habitats and ecosystems whilst we discuss the challenges of climate change. The possibilities are endless but we must always remember... Pedagogy and purpose comes before the tech. We cannot let the tech dictate learning, but we must ensure it enhances it! When creating the Campus-XR science lab our 2 core objectives were to: ?? Democratise access, replicating the highest-quality equipment for all. ?? Eliminate the risks associated with handling acids, alkalis and other hazardous materials, ensuring that even the most mischievous users can't cause real-world harm with Bunsen burners or other potentially dangerous apparatus. Today marks 14 years since the Serious Games and Virtual Worlds research team (led by Michael Callaghan) at Ulster University was nominated for a prestigious Times Higher Education Award for our then groundbreaking STEM project, "Engineering Education Island." This recognition, highlighted in the newspaper coverage back in 2010, was a pivotal moment in my journey that began in this space in 2008 (hence the baby face)! Looking back, I'm amazed at how much has happened in this field. The evolution from simple virtual worlds to the expansive concept of the metaverse represents a monumental shift in how we think about immersive education. Virtual environments have now become vital tools for engagement and collaboration, reshaping the learning landscape. This revolutionary concept combines AI and 3D virtual environments to open the door of metaverse tackle a critical issue I’ve observed in my own university’s education system: the shortage of skilled technical staff and the challenges of an outdated teaching system. The Vision: My project aims to create a dynamic, virtual educator capable of delivering interactive and personalized lessons.
