When we originally launched in 2001, there existed a glaring need for family businesses to meaningfully connect, learn and share with one another. Over the years, this has been the foundation of our work, and it is the principle upon which we continue to build. Reflections on Hosting #TheListAwards2024 (1st Edition); Our Value Proposal. Imagining a #project to mean something to the world, before you create it, and then have its users feel the same way when the project eventually comes out doesn’t happen often. When i curated #TheListAwards, I wanted #communitychampions and #impactmakers like myself to feel honored and appreciated in the manner we should. Key elements of this recognition and honor involved; 1. An #awards night in #luxury. I dreamt of bringing these amazing heroes to a night they would step into something beautiful, to forget their hardship of community work, being unappreciated and just be lost in a world of #joy and #happiness. 2. An #awards programme that actually gives them money as an incentive. Without criticizing other awards, people who work in our communities are proving daily that they are worth our support. All they should do is state their argument and show how they have worked hard and impacted our communities, and through the rigorous selection framework if they are successful, that is enough for us to honor them. They do not need to pay us money to get to the awards or to get the award, we instead pay them! So our winners walked away with some cash! 3. The package; our awards provided for our winners from out of town; transport, 1 day accommodation and flight tickets for winners from out of Zimbabwe. For the winner and the 1st runner up, we provided for their tickets to the event worth $100 each. We gave each an additional ticket for their plus one so that they would witness us honoring them. 4. Rigorous Selection Criteria; From the nomination form, it was rigorous such that one had to be serious to be able to enter. Once nomination phase closed, the preliminary adjudication was also thorough with the training being done of adjudicators who went on to streamline the applications in each categories to come up with semi finalists. These were either put to the vote or to the jury. Both tracks decided and we got the winners in each category. 5. Independence of the Selection Committee; #TheListAwards Board deliberately appointed the Selection Committee to make sure that both the board and the secretariat did not influence the outcome to maintain the integrity of the awards. So we were also very pleasantly surprised with some of the outcomes from the jury. 6. The Awards Night was hosted at the amazing Golden Conifer on the 8th in great luxury and ambience in Harare, great food, great company, networking, learning and honoring those deserving champions. The event has been organised by a coalition of the city region’s business organisations: the Federation of Small Businesses, the CBI, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, the Institute of Directors, the Institute of Chartered Accountants England & Wales, and pro-manchester. It’s not about words; it’s about substance. Candidates will discuss tangible strategies to stimulate growth, ignite innovation, and cultivate an environment where businesses can flourish. ? See how BDDC is helping local organizations thrive. Reviving Downtown, One Business at a Time. "First off, it is much appreciated that these funds were available to help support the growth and development of downtown businesses. It was great working with the BDDC. Emmanuel made the process easy and was always willing to meet and answer questions. The application process was straight forward and moved along quickly. Five stars! The grant helped in a couple of different ways. The funds allowed us to invest in an upgrade to our website, increasing our ability to reach more potential clients in different ways. The funds also helped to augment the costs of doing a business video campaign of downtown businesses that was well received not only by the business owners, but through their networks.? By doing these videos it provided a couple of benefits. It allowed us to get to know some different business owners in the downtown area, beyond our existing clients, to start building relationships where at some point, they might consider using our services. It provided us with material which can be used in our own social media. The more people see the opportunity for business in the downtown, the more exposure it gives us as a company. ? We believe that the video campaign helped in a couple of ways. Each business now has a professionally developed video that they can use in their own business to promote what they are doing. There are no restriction on the use…it is theirs. Upon launching the video series, we had a number of different businesses approach us, looking to “get in on the action”, but unfortunately there were only so many spots available. Secondly, we had a lot of feedback from people outside of downtown letting us know that they appreciated getting to learn more about what was available in the downtown area. We did want to promote the work of the BDDC and the Downtown Biz, so that people could understand the important work these groups are doing and from the feedback we heard, that was accomplished. We are in the business of building business, and believe that to do that, potential customers need to know you exist. We believe the projects we undertook with the funding provided by BDDC, has assisted us in expanding people’s understanding of who we are and what we do."
