Today we are reflecting on the 60th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, which was signed into law on September 3, 1964. The law sought to protect pristine public lands that were “untrammeled by man,” an idea we now know is a myth: Before they were forced out, Indigenous people had been living in these landscapes for millennia. As the law reaches a new milestone, it’s our collective responsibility to rethink how we conceptualize “wild” places and what it means to protect them. Still, over the last six decades, the law has remained a powerful tool for preserving our most important public lands from short-sighted development and reckless logging projects. Today, there are more than 800 Wilderness Areas scattered across the country, adding up to an impressive 111 million acres. But there’s lots of work to be done. Less than three percent of the nation’s Wilderness Acres are in the Southeast. That’s why SELC and our partners are fighting for more public lands designations across the region. Happy #EarthDay! Today is a day when the #global community comes together to honor our #planet, reflect on the impact we are #collectively having on it, and take bold #action to protect a #livable world for all life.?As we face the existential crises of #climatechange, #biodiversity loss, and continued #socialinjustices, Earth Day has become a reminder to the #world of our need to come together for collective impact and #boldaction to find a more #sustainable path forward for #people and #nature. During the past few weeks, the #federalgovernment has taken such bold action. One of the actions that is especially meaningful for me was the announcement of the Public Lands Rule by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This Rule puts the #conservation, #restoration, #protection of U.S. #publiclands and #water, as well as the #stewardship of #Tribal #cultural lands on equal footing with other multiple uses. For more than four decades, extractive uses like drilling and mining have dominated BLM’s lands across the #West. That harmful dynamic has now changed. The Rule will allow for the conservation of tens of millions of acres of public lands by #2030. These lands—now critical for providing connective tissue for #wildlife moving between large #parks and other #protectedareas—will now be getting the stewardship they deserve. This is a long overdue and momentous #culture shift at an #agency whose lands provide some of the most critical #wildlands left in our country. I'm grateful to the leadership at The White House, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the BLM for their #vision, #commitment, and #courage to make these necessary conservation actions to protect our #ecosystems, preserve wildlife, and provide #environmentaljustice to adjacent #communities facing the mounting #impacts of a shifting #climate. The Wilderness Society, together with our #local and national #partners, has played a vital role in the realization of these important advancements.?Our #collectiveaction and #commitment to preserving public lands and making them #accessible to all has made this Earth Day one of the most #memorable in the long-standing #history of this special day.
?? HUGE NEWS JUST IN: The Biden administration has released the long-awaited final Bureau of Land Management Public Lands Rule!! Attention #landowners: Do you own land with multiple family members or a group of people, with at least part of that land kept natural or conserved? Please consider participating in this 10-15 minute survey, which asks about shared ownership of land: https://go.wisc.edu/wl514w Note that the land need not be formally conserved, and that not all owners need to be listed on the deed. Thanks for helping #conservation science!
