Career Coaches of the World: What would it look like to *SHOW* your students what's possible, not just tell them? Exhibit A: The Career Success Conference at University of Texas at Tyler While I was lucky enough to get to experience the excitement first-hand (the drumline greeting outside, all the festivities inside), what really blew me away was the dozens of expert panels the team convened! ?? Literally, there was a dedicated session with alumni for every career from Accounting and Acute Care to Social Work and Trauma Medicine. Which meant that the school's small-but-mighty career team (Rosemary, Leah, Pamela, Margot, Bryan, and Nyree) has been hustling for an ENTIRE YEAR to get this organized. ?? But it was so worth it. Not just because hundreds of students showed up (special shout-out to Junayed, Stormy, Breanna, Angel, Mohammed, William, and Marlon for being brave volunteers) or because they got the participation of the whole school leadership (including President Julie V. Philley and SVP for Student Success Ona Tolliver). But because of this simple idea: Nothing says "We believe you can accomplish anything" than showing "Here are the actual people who actually did it." ?? When the problems arise, the crisis will let us know who you really are ?? Everybody believes when things are going up and the way it makes us happy. But when it goes negative, it confirms who they really are. It's often said that adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it. When things are going smoothly, it's easy to maintain a positive demeanor and get along with others. However, during challenging times, true personalities, resilience, and the capacity to handle stress and uncertainty come to the forefront. This can be true in many aspects of life, whether in personal relationships, professional environments, or even in how people manage their finances during economic downturns. It’s in these moments of crisis that individuals and organizations show their true strength and values.

Honored to have Carbon Health's Mark Hyde share with us. Great insight into career fields in the healthcare industry. Mark also shared some awesome insight into what a life of success and significance looks like: -Try different things in the work field to figure out what you want to do -He checks to see if there’s anything “pressing” that he needs to do right away while working remotely -Talk to your customers/candidates as if they were your friends, it builds a stronger connection -Mark has a very flexible schedule that makes him accountable for his work, his company trusts him and knows he’ll get it done -You only limit yourself, take chances, and try something new -Ask yourself “What do I have to lose?” -Don’t be afraid to be rejected -Giving back and volunteering are important, you can change somebody's life and make a difference -Strive to do your best and build your work ethic for the better -If it’s not done with heart, it’s not worth doing. Anything worth doing is worth being done right -Always continue to learn (community classes, LinkedIn) -Don’t be afraid/worried if you end up not liking the first career you picked, move on and find something you truly enjoy, that gives you the feeling that you won’t work a day in your life -Prioritize your tasks when it comes to your life and work, make sure you are getting the “pressing” things done first, and work down the list -Build strong connections with your customers so they can trust you more and feel more comfortable around you -“Drive your own bus, to the dream life you want to live.” You will be held accountable for your own life and it’s your job to prove you are capable of being trusted -Try new things and allow yourself to get out of your comfort zone -Make the most of each day and remember to not waste your day -Start volunteering -Always strive to do your personal best and more, don’t limit your goals, and work hard -Leaving something unfinished never feels good -Find some hobbies that you are passionate about that allow you to enjoy yourself in your downtime -Don’t be afraid to ask questions -You don’t have to be the smartest person, just be the hardest working -Get to know people Prosser Career Education Center Entrepreneurship Program RISE | Regional Innovation & Startup Education
